US General: Half of All Afghan District Centers Under Taliban Control

Looking like the GOP in congress are fighting back. Quite a few of them are former military, some served in Afghanistan, and they are pissed off! They just did a press conference and said if Biden won't clean this mess up, they will. Not exactly sure how they will do that, but I appreciate the intent.

I hope they are serious and aren't just playing politics.

I know this is not a social acceptable view but honestly American citizens and "friendly" Afghanis had to know this was coming and had to know in time to make plans. As a veteran I would be absolutely infuriated if we had left American military members there but I'm sorry, I just can't say the same for those who chose to be there because of a career, for family, or just because they like hell holes. Rule #1 of living in a foreign country...have an evacuation plan. To be clear, I truly hope all who want to leave have the opportunity to get out safely but I don't hold my goobermint responsible for those who do not want to leave or who did not make the necessary arrangements to get out suddenly if needed. Sorry but it's just my honest opinion.

..... and then there's this:

Some of them may have, but their plan included *some* help from the US govt to keep the Taliban from controlling the capital streets before we left the country.

Had the administration put the word out in time and went to some effort to contact them, I think we could have gotten most of them.

A poll earlier this month showed 70% of Americans supporting the withdrawal of our troops in Afghanistan. Members of the GOP need to tread very carefully on this subject; especially since the mid-term election season is nearing. If the GOP starts saying we need to send more troops in, it backfire on them because people are quite simply tired of our country being in a war because the people in Afghanistan are doing nothing to help defeat the Taliban.

I have absolutely no respect for the Afghanistan people as a whole.

I think the people supported withdrawal as a concept, but had they known what was going to happen the poll would have probably been much different.

I don't think the majority of the people are going to appreciate any politician saying we need to send in more troops. We just need to pull the troops out right now. Let the chips fall where they may for the Afghanis as their defense is their responsibility. If they don't want to defend themselves, then they deserve what they get.

We should have gotten our people and our friends out first, and took whatever time was needed to do that.

And our weaponry.

I think people realize there is a difference between sending in more troops for a very short time in order to get everyone out vs sending more troops in to stay for months or years. Most people, I think, would support the former but not the latter.

Taking all the weaponry back would have meant a lot more flights and expense. Believe it or not, it would have been a hell of a lot less expensive in the long run to destroy all those things than to fly it out of there.

When we first invaded Afghanistan, we thought we would only be there for the short-term and look at how long we have been there.

What good do you see sending more troops back in there?

To aid in getting all American citizens and Afghans that helped us during the last 20 years out safely. Then get out and let them destroy their own country.
