Should have gone to the airport meeting today

I've only heard about this in the last couple of days. I watched the video from the Commissioners' meeting, and I'm disturbed.

Personally, I do think the airport has potential to be beneficial to our community. I also understand why others oppose it. I do, however, feel that this will affect the quality of life for those living in close proximity. Whether or not it will be beneficial or not is not the question, in my opinion. The secrecy of this issue - being kept from the citizens of the county - isn't okay. Even if it IS a good thing, it should have been discussed with the public. You don't tell people it's what's best after the fact. You do your research, and you campaign to make the public aware of the benefits. The taxpayers of this county deserve to have a say-so in its development!

I love Todd Pownall, and I consider him a friend. I'm appalled that our other commissioners would treat him in this manner. Regardless of whether or not he normally agrees or disagrees with the others, he represents people in our community, and he deserves to be fully informed at all times.

I found it interesting that David Austin said Todd had chosen not to read emails or take phone calls so he could claim ignorance. But then he turned around, after Todd said that none of the other commissioners had discussed the airport with him at anytime, and asked, "Can you blame us?" So THAT proves to me that the commissioners DID intentionally keep the information from him. Speak out of both sides of your mouth much?

Is it the Airport Authority or the Board of Commissioners that made the decision?

It's the Airport Authority but David and Boyd Austin both sit on the board.

Yes IF, there are three huge subdivisions within a couple of miles of the airport, one practically at the end of the runway. And Poole Elementary is about 1/2 mile from there.

I'm pretty sure there were no feasibility or impact studies done. The powers that be just decided this was a good thing.

JSYK, Blake Swafford was brought to Paulding County by Jerry Shearin. Not sure we will ever rid ourselves of that vermin when his minions are still running the show.

Those types of studies are required for FAA approval.

I read since it was done "5 years ago when they built the airport" it wasn't necessary.

When we bought out here (union) in 2002 we knew the airport was possible.

We bought out here in '93, your subdivision was woods, so were all the others. Adair Farms was family owned by a friend of ours, there was no mention of an airport with passenger service.
My point, though not previously made clear, is that the school and the subdivisions up that way that you keep mentioning all happened after the airport possibility was known.

You heard wrong. EIS is part of the review process for scheduled commercial use.

We voted against it, they put it in anyway. They said the vote was only against funding it, now ask those residents why the voted against it and they will tell you they didn't want the airport. That subdivision and school were there before they built the airport, was there really an impact study done? The runway was supposed to only be 5000 ft, then it went to 5500 feet they ended at 6000 feet. We have been lied to and lied to over and over and over again. It wasn't going to cost the taxpayers anything.

It's not the airport per se, it's the way this airport got there and what they are doing with it now. They don't even have any prospects to fly in yet. Google Mid America Airport, it's state of the art, but sits empty. No airline wants to use it. The airline industry is struggling already. There are airports in Cartersville, Villa Rica, Marietta, Carrollton..........everywhere. Why do we need all these airports?

We keep being promised jobs, when they put in the 4 lane, the airport, the courthouse, the downtown revitalization, there are no companies that have Paulding on the radar right now. Want to see traffic congestion, Hiram will look like an expressway if we have 18 wheelers coming in and out of the airport, not to mention what they will do to the roads.

Get ready, the next leg of this is going to be that toll road. They only abandoned it because they couldn't get Carroll and Bartow county to go along with them. We have no interstate access for 15-20 miles, no manufacturing company is going to come here because they are going to do the studies that show the traffic through Dallas, Hiram and Powder Springs is prohibitive to get product from the airport to the interstate. Fail to plan, plan to fail.

I moved to Paulding County to be in the Country, I grew up in the city and couldn't wait to get out of there. I saw the corruption and underhanded elected officials do as they please with taxpayer money for years. Paulding County wasn't like this before the Shearin regime and guess where Blake Swafford came from, he's a friend of Jerry Shearin.

My house will be paid for next year, it was supposed to be an investment for us to retire. Our property values have fallen below what we paid for it in 1993, when we moved to Yorkville to get out of the East side of the County.

I don't know who in their right mind would think this is a good thing for any property owner within 5 miles of the airport.

Maybe you knew about the "possibility" of an airport, but the underhanded way this entire thing has been handled is shameful.

My personal experience in a different area with a large international airport right by my house and a smaller airport 20 minutes away makes it hard for me to go along with all of the "the sky is falling" predictions of what will happen here. I know there are folks that did not want any changes to come to Paulding but there are also lots of folks that do want growth, etc. There's no way to make all citizens happy and if the people put in office by the citizens of the county are at least making their majority happy they have done their job. It may be the case that every person you know is against the airport but you still can't be sure that the majority of the county is against it. My house is under the current flight path(s) but as yet I am pretty neutral on this latest development.

You know I'm not even in the flight path, it's not me I'm worried about. It's those homeowners at the end of the runway, the kids at Poole Elementary and the folks in Overlook and Visa Lake. They will take the greatest impact of the noise because the planes have to land from that direction. The other side has a rock hill in the way.

Now maybe it doesn't matter to everyone that families are going to be hurt by this but it matters to me, my heart is breaking for the property value loss not not mention the health risks associated with living near an airport.

Really we should all be a little concerned, the risk of cancer is greatly increased not to mention the learning handicap for kids.

Airport Noise Affects Children
Airport noise can also have negative effects on children’s health and development. A 1980 study examining the impact of airport noise on children’s health found higher blood pressure in kids living near Los Angeles’ LAX airport than in those living farther away. A 1995 German study found a link between chronic noise exposure at Munich’s International Airport and elevated nervous system activity and cardiovascular levels in children living nearby. And a 2005 study published in the prestigious British medical journal, The Lancet, found that kids living near airports in Britain, Holland and Spain lagged behind their classmates in reading by two months for every five decibel increase above average noise levels in their surroundings. The study also associated aircraft noise with lowered reading comprehension, even after socio-economic differences were considered.

Citizen Groups Concerned About Effects of Airport Noise and Pollution
Living near an airport also means facing significant exposure to air pollution. Jack Saporito of the U.S. Citizens Aviation Watch Association (CAW), a coalition of concerned municipalities and advocacy groups, cites several studies linking pollutants common around airports--such as diesel exhaust, carbon monoxide and leaked chemicals--to cancer, asthma, liver damage, lung disease, lymphoma, myeloid leukemia, and even depression. CAW is lobbying for the clean up of jet engine exhaust as well as the scrapping or modification of airport expansion plans across the country.

I understand where you're coming from but you're assuming the worst is a guarantee for them. We're not talking 747s, etc. here and and nose-dive property values is not a guarantee.

As for cancer ... I'm far more concerned about public water than I am the expansion/development they are talking about for Paulding.
