Should have gone to the airport meeting today

So are they going to fill in the lake?? What about the streams and creeks that feed the lake? Are they going to reroute the water.

I know Winchester said this is normal operating procedures for purchases but when taxpayer money is involved, there is usually a different procedure. Jerry never got to use that courthouse he threw at us, wonder if David Austin will ever get to enjoy that airport?

There were a lot of closed door deals with this. Looking at Honeybunny's link, I'm not convinced everything was on the up and up. I know if they didn't cross their T's and dot their I's it will be a mess, an expensive mess.

The 15 page document? LOL what part?

On the other hand do you really think Austin would be part of a deal that was not on the up and up and will bite him in the butt if not? I am not saying that he does everything that we agree with, just that I would think he would cross his t's and dot his i's so it does not come back on him. :dunno

We will see won't we. Gwinnett County has an airport, they already have lots of businesses, they have a lot of people and they didn't want this. Does this not send up some red flags??

Polk county has industry, Floyd County has industry, all without passenger flights. I tell you what, I'll make sure they route those planes right over your subdivision and we'll see how you like the noise. After all you are only 10 miles away from the airport, shouldn't be a problem for you if it shouldn't be for those families that live within a couple of miles of the airport. There is a large subdivision, Clear Creek at the end of that runway. It was there before the airport. Two more about 2 miles up the road, Vista Lake and Overlook. Not to mention the elementary school that sits less than 1/2 mile from the end of that runway.

It's not going to bring more jobs just like the 4 lane didn't. The limited access 4 lane with a straight shot to the airport, you know the one with 1000 stop lights. The airport as built was supposed to bring jobs, businesses and jobs...........it shouldn't have to be expanded if it did what it was supposed to.

I'm sick of being lied to while my property taxes go up and up and up because no one sees a problem. It will bring jooooobbbbbbsssss BULL

WOW. Take a breather. I have not been ugly and I actually do not care about planes. I have lived near airports before. You have no idea, yet, as I do not, if you have been lied to or not or whether any jobs will come or not. Yes, we have had many issues in this county with things being built we did not ask for, but I like to give the benefit of the doubt before I start screaming liar. If he/they lied about something it will come out and he will be out. We have seen that before.

I also thought there was more to Gwinnett then them not "wanting it". I am not completely sure though.

Here's a post to the Dacula patch from one of the people opposed. I sure hope the commissioners did their homework.
Interestingly enough, Brett Smith failed to give details of his economic impact study showing where the $1.25 billion and 20,000 jobs will come from. Could it be that he did no impact study?? Also, where is the list of corporations just waiting to flock into Gwinnett once we have a regional airport? Specifically, can he name one company that has refused to move into Gwinnett because we don't have a regional airport?? There are many, many successful cities in Atlanta proper with no airport that are thriving....Alpharetta....John's Creek...indicating that Mr. Smith's philosophy is flawed. I truly have enough common sense to know that an empty 737 uses less thrust than a fully loaded aircraft; therefore, his little "experiment" to show how quiet these jets are is useless and invalid. With every state, community, and city suffering high unemployment problems across the whole nation, I find it laughable that Mr. Smith thinks that Gwinnett will be the exception just because of a regional airport. And as far as opponents being "whiners", who is whining about having to drive for an hour or more to get to Hartsfield...someone needs to call the "WAAAA mbulance for them! If they had any sense, they would've realized when they bought property in Gwinnett, there would be a long drive to the closest airport. My sympathy rests with the hundreds of thousand of residents who will experience the noise, pollution, and traffice problems associated with commercial jet service at Briscoe.

And another one

Kristi, you gave Brett Smith more than his fair share of press in today's Dacula Patch. If you have not already interviewed Jim Reagan with Citizens For A Better Gwinnett (C4ABG), I would appreciate your doing so. While I expect our Board of Commissioners to make decisions which are in the best interests of ALL of the citizens of Gwinnett County, I am of the opinion that there are times when issues that will ultimately affect taxpayer dollars should be settled at the ballot box. Privatization of Gwinnett County Briscoe Field with a commercial airline option is one of those times. Smith can talk about an increase in residential property values all he wants to but there is a knowledgeable real estate guru who is a member of the C4ABG Board of Directors who would debate Smith on this issue. Another question I have is who will pay for the infrastructure that will be required to support Smith's proposal? Once again, I depend on our BOC to issue bonds to build public works projects which are in the best interets of ALL the citizens of Gwinnett County. I use these public works projects and I have no problem with my tax dollars retiring the bond debt. The county would in all proability issue bonds to pay for infrastructure improvements, Smith would get a "sweetheart deal" and laugh all the way to the bank, and we taxpayers would be stuck with the bill. That's the way I see it.

Thank you. I did not think to look at their Patch. I also agree that I hope that the commissioners did do their homework.

Effects of Airport noise:

Airport Noise Affects Children
Airport noise can also have negative effects on children’s health and development. A 1980 study examining the impact of airport noise on children’s health found higher blood pressure in kids living near Los Angeles’ LAX airport than in those living farther away. A 1995 German study found a link between chronic noise exposure at Munich’s International Airport and elevated nervous system activity and cardiovascular levels in children living nearby. And a 2005 study published in the prestigious British medical journal, The Lancet, found that kids living near airports in Britain, Holland and Spain lagged behind their classmates in reading by two months for every five decibel increase above average noise levels in their surroundings. The study also associated aircraft noise with lowered reading comprehension, even after socio-economic differences were considered

Commission confronts issues of trust and secrecy

My computer just puked when it heard that voice. I don't do p.com in any form or fashion! GPH is a nut job who fell from the tallest oak tree and landed on his head!

Yea and he's 100% behind this. What does that tell you?

An elementary school sits 1/2 mile off the end of the runway. Was an impact study done? If so, I want to see it.

Yes and yes.

Land sales and purchases are always done behind closed doors, at least for the last 15 years I've been attending BOC and other public meetings here. They are never discussed in public until after it's done and over. Now if there is a rezoning needed (which this does not as far as I know) then there may be a time for public comments.

And Jerry did get to use his new office for about 6 months before David took office. I've been in that office a few times, it's nice but very conservative. I expected a lot more that way people have talked about it.

It's really not about he office, it's about the money spent to build the courthouse and adjacent building. It's about David lying to get elected and turning right around and raising the taxes. It's about the people in the subdivision that live at the end of the runway. It's about the elementary school 1/2 mile from the end of that runway. The school was built in 1986, before the airport.

Where is the impact study?? Where is the concern for voters and kids?? Where is the common sense in these Paulding County elected officials?? It's about money and guess who's going to pay again.

Just remember, "You have to pass it, so you can find out what's inside."

That elementary skule on Wayside Lane or whatever? On the other side of 278. IDK.

NG - I agree with you completely. The way this was handled is atrocious, and it just pisses me right off. I voted against Herr Austin last go-round and will do so again. I have spoken with both him and Mr. Barnett (my commish) on a few occasions, and all I got was thanks, little lady, you let us take care of it, and was sent away with a flea in my ear.

This county's politics suck worse than almost anywhere else I've ever seen. Yes, they are bad all over, but honestly - this county's politics are horrible!!! The attitudes are just outrageously arrogant.

Oh, and no, I am not for passenger flights. It won't affect me since I'm on the polar opposite end of the county, but it's a stupid idea that sounds like it was invented to benefit somebody's brother-in-law.

This came up tonight at the football game. One of the Dad's is in airplane maintenance. He mentioned that the only thing they didn't have was maintenance and he was considering looking into it.

I don't understand all the procedures.

Sorry, tired and upset.........

OK it opened in 2003. The airport in 2008.

The City of Atlanta bought the property in the early 70's. It was never hidden from the public that is was a prime choice for a 2nd ATL airport. So technically, it was there long before anything was ever built in that area. Even as late as the mid 90's it was discussed as one of the top three sites that ATL was trying to decide on. They later backed off because of the terrain.

I found out about this in 89 when I moved to this County. But I was going to be at the end of the runway for the other potential site....that is now the Georgian Resort in New Georgia.

When we bought out here (union) in 2002 we knew the airport was possible.

We bought out here in '93, your subdivision was woods, so were all the others. Adair Farms was family owned by a friend of ours, there was no mention of an airport with passenger service.
