So has this solved the flying issue? Will you just drive down to FL to grab your boat?

Nope, still flying.

Well, remind her that my mother has ever been TERRIFIED at the thought of flying, and if she flew, then SWAY can do it. It's really actually pretty monotonous. Go to the airport (I highly recommend the parking lots with security and take their shuttle vs. parking at the airport), schlep through security, wander to the gate, sit and wait, get on the plane, sit and wait, fly to destination/land, taxi to gate, sit and wait, get caught in crush of people all standing up at once pulling their crap out of overhead bins and standing in the aisle, schlep through that airport to ground transportation. The only thing she'll feel is the takeoff and possible banking. But she'll have you...she can squeeze your hand if she gets really afraid. ;)

It took me a minute, but I LOVE that! Although, to GD, she would be SWAM! :laugh

That's a big part of why I don't do cruises ... I don't like people. I sure as heck don't want to be trapped on a boat with that many of them. And if I'm going to go and end up staying in my cabin/on my balcony ... I may as well go to a fixed location and do the site-seeing stuff from there.

I'm such an anti-social individual.

You and my mother. You'll laugh, but when I went to Alaska, it was quite by chance. I had never wanted to go or anything, but the parental units REALLY wanted to go. But Daddy was starting to get sick then and I didn't feel good about their going alone. The company I worked for at the time was going through a really bad period so my boss laid me off for a month. So I said to the parents why don't we do Alaska...well, they were thrilled. We had a balcony cabin, but found out when we got there that we had been put in a CRAZY nice suite that hadn't been booked. It was beyond nice. Anyhoo, we ate many meals via room service (no charge in this ritzy suite), and didn't see any shows or anything. We read and looked at the scenery (they had an on-board tour guide/nature expert that broadcast on one of the TV channels, and they'd make announcements when we were approaching something of note), and we did the shore excursions. It was great. They didn't have to be around people, and we all had a great time.

For all its other stupidity, the State Dept. is a fantastic place for up-to-the-minute info on the status of a particular place in the world. They keep that site updated very well.
They do and we have looked at it and even called when we have traveled. Things can be volatile in some of the places we have chose to travel and day to day things can change. I am glad to have the resource!

I'm such a geek. I like to check it sometimes and see what they're saying about places like Madagascar. (Generally not somewhere you want to go.) There's ALWAYS warnings about Syria, Pakistan, etc. I would def. take that information to be able to call.

What's the freakiest/most dangerous place you've ever traveled, SD? The worst place I've ever been is Jamaica. I don't recommend that to ANYBODY, even in a resort. Talk about slackers. Man, that place is creepy. I felt very oppressed the entire time we were there (this was 20 years ago, and things have only changed for the worse from what I understand), and Kingston was completely scary. They say now Kingston is pretty much a war zone with cartels, gangs, and whatnot.

LOL. I love Jamaica. We have been there a few times alone and with friends. The excursions are fantastic. The people scare my husband. He did not like venturing out to the open markets and people yelling at him and grabbing his arm. :)) They would leave me alone.
He also does not like getting dropped by boat into the middle of the ocean with no land in sight so I can scuba dive. He freaked out bad, which freaked out my son, which made it bad for me to control the two of them until the boat showed back up. It was not a good day.
I don't know that anywhere we have traveled has been freaky (heehee) but many wind up on the dangerous list. I like to experience things I never have and I have always been thankful for what we have here. (well....I won't ruin this topic by going political)

I love Mexico and have been many times. My experience is, to some degree, they do not like Americans. I wouldn't go right now on a bet. Flying is nothing. We have flights at the end of the month. Since I don't sleep on planes (to little space to get comfortable) I just make sure I have something to read. That, and bubble gum.
They act completely differently the minute you speak Spanish to them. Even bad Spanish.

:thumbsup

I've loved my trips to Mexico. The first time I went, I was fairly fluent in Spanish. The second time was much later and I had forgotten a lot, but the more I talked with the people in their language, the more I recalled. I love Mexico!

Been to Mexico twice and enjoyed myself... It was only 1 time chad was offered Mexican women lol all else was fine

Umm, I'm thinking a few of y'all need to get out more.

Sure, flying can be scary. It's also the best, and safest, way to get from point "A" to point "B" if they are more than about 7 hours driving distance. Bring something to occupy your time, take a nap, read a book, etc. Mrs. Mac and I have both logged a ton of miles, I think between the two of us we've probably visited just about every state in the USA.

And GD, I'd visit Playa in a heart beat. Been wanting to go there for years. Check this website out if you get second thoughts about the cruise thing. http://www.playa.info/webcam-playa-palms.html. In particular, check the tabs and forums accessible from the tabs at the top. Some great pictures, lot of inside info, and lots of folks from America that moved there. And yes, the webcam pics are work safe.

Having said that, I also love cruises. Been to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska. Would like to do a Greece cruise. If you tend to car sickness, you might want to take some of the non-drowsy Damamine along with you. And sunscreen is a must if you plan to go out during the day that far south - no matter how tanned you are, you will burn.

Whatever y'all do, have a great time! And don't take your laptop, access rates (especially phone roaming charges) are VERY EXPENSIVE on a cruise ship/

I went there on a 10-day mission trip; we stayed in the mountain interior with locals. It was EYE. OPENING. And not in a good way.

I'll give it some thought so I can write coherently. Maybe in a couple of days when I have a few nanoseconds to string together...
