Spin-off from the "I have never" thread...

Looks like we're going to Playa del Carmen with the younguns this May, and will be flying down to get on the boat. "She who adores me" has never flown before and is terrified to. We're thinking a "B.A. Baracus" approach might be necessary and knock her out with drugs before we go.

When my son took his first flight this summer he said the worst part was the hard banking turns ... go figure, that was the only thing that I didn't talk to him about before he flew.

I'd be far more worried about the danger of being anywhere in Mexico than I would be about flying to get there. While I am never scared while flying, I am not kidding about Mexico. Even the resort areas now are getting very dangerous due to the drug cartels. But if you go, tell her even my mother, who has a white-knuckle fear of flying, did just fine on the trip to Colorado last summer. There's really nothing to it...you don't feel anything except when you take off. I always go to sleep, even if I'm trying not to...it has the same effect on me as putting a baby on a clothes dryer.

By the way, keep an eye on things via the State Dept.'s web site prior to your trip. They will give current updates as to any situation on the ground. Site is here:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html

And I see there is a current warning about Mexico (note the other countries with warnings):

I did my 1st flight 4 years ago and have flown 3 times since

I was SCARED OUT OF MY WITS but lived to tell the tale

I held Chads hand, sat by the window seat and prayed. I do not like take off but landing and everything else is ok

DO NOT DRUG HER cause the plane ride is not that long and you want her to be able to enjoy herself as soon as you land

Fantastic idea! Redirect her fear. At take off, during any turbulence/hard turns, and at landing be sure to tell her the latest vicious attacks on innocent tourists. :))

i had my ipod with some movies loaded on it and watch ... it helps me calm some

On the last flight I took, I watched like three episodes of iCarly on the TV on the airplane (in the seatback of the seat in front of me). :D

This place is pretty swanky, hopefully it'll be OK. The younguns went there for their honeymoon and said it was the most amazing place they'd ever been to.

The bad part is...you guys won't get many miles out of me that week. ;D

Snicker if you want, but STRATFOR and other security experts predict that two countries are in imminent danger of collapse (and descent into abject chaos a la Somalia) in the near future - Pakistan and Mexico. I'm not telling anybody not to go, but I do think people should be informed.

There's no question about how dangerous Mexico (and because of that, our southern border) is. I just got a twisted kick out of the redirected fear thing that popped in my head. :)) "I know the turbulence is scary honey but it's nowhere near as scary as being caught in the middle of a Mexican drug cartel shootout."

I'll be all brown before I go. I finally realized it's better that way because I won't burn my first day there and be miserable the rest of the time.

I love Mexico and have been many times. My experience is, to some degree, they do not like Americans. I wouldn't go right now on a bet. Flying is nothing. We have flights at the end of the month. Since I don't sleep on planes (to little space to get comfortable) I just make sure I have something to read. That, and bubble gum.

Doesn't work that way down there. Bring high SPF sunscreen or you will burn.

Okay, yes, I am easily confused. Flying down to get on the boat? I thought you said you were staying in Playa del Carmen?
If you are staying there, what resort? We have stayed in a couple different ones down there.
