I used to save bacon grease, but decided it was rather gross so I quit doing that a number of years ago. My mom still saves it but I have no idea where she keeps it...prob in a bacon grease jar near the stove.

Here's what I can't seem to throw out...Folgers coffee plastic containers. For some strange reason, I feel compelled to wash those and keep them in a cabinet. I guess I'll find a use for them one day. (A bit off topic, I know)

switch to Kcups lol

what did you do with the grease when you saved it?

I used it to season green beans, cornbread and fry stuff in. I don't fry anything anymore though. Now I use a little drop of olive oil & chicken broth in my green beans...and I just use olive oil in the pan for cornbread. One day all those coffee containers will come in handy, just don't know what for yet. LOL
Girl, get on Pinterest and do a search for coffee cans. I bet you'll find all kinds of stuff!!

Mine are those red plastic can things...but I LOVE the idea of using them in place of those topsy turvy thingys in your search! Thanks! Next summer we might just have some home grown tomatoes!!! :cheer1
I had to go look at it, now I have to have a cup of coffee! :))

:spitchick That is funny! I never sleep. I try to go to bed at midnight. Husband gets up and make noise at 12:30 until he leaves at 1:30. I take the dog out, we go to bed and sleep until 4:00 - 4:30 and start again.

With the exception of just a tad bit mixed in my dogs food or if I am cooking something else at the time, it gets tossed. Although I remember my grandmothers always having a coffee tin next to the stove for bacon drippings. That tin can never got refridgerated, it was just a flavor staple to get a heaping spoonful and toss it in a cast iron pan for many uses such a green beans, green fried tomatoes, hashbrowns, eggs, pancakes, etc.

Say what you want, but I don't think it's the bacon grease killing us. I think it's the processed foods, hormones added to our meats and chemicals on our fruits and vegetables.

My grandmother lived on lard. She lived to almost 91. Both of her parents lived to 90s. Her youngest brother recently passed away at 94. Sunday dinner was always fried chicken, pinto beans, fried potatoes, cole slaw and biscuits. And with the exception of the cole slaw, it was all cooked with lard.

Totally agree! I save my bacon grease if the bacon is natural. It seems to have a relatively low smoking point, so I don't use it alone for frying very much. Just a little for flavoring.

We switched to turkey bacon because it is "safer" to eat than modern pork products. Some of the crap that is fed to commercially farmed pork is scary. No, commercial turkey isn't exactly free from the ugliness but there are more restrictions on what can go into a turkey vs. a pig while being farmed. It's a cheap way to improve the quality of our food without having to make the full jump to organic.

I am 100% in agreement that our modern food is making us sick.

I knew some people who used to make popcorn in a kettle on the stove. They used bacon grease. That was some great popcorn!!!

I agree that it is the processed foods and hormones, but that does include that bacon fat. LOL

We eat as organic as we can afford to. We always have, but I think that the chemicals around us now compared to our grandparents is so significantly more it is almost impossible to avoid completely.

Also while they did eat what some might consider a less than healthy diet their lifestyles were different too. We are a much lazier society than they were. :))

Well guess what we had last night for dinner?
I started with a little leftover bacon grease to oil the pan before adding the extra lean ground beef for the homemade chili with a couple of teaspoons of cinnamon for the Cincinnati type of chili although I did keep the kidney beans in the recipe unlike the Cincinnati recipe.
I then used some of the bacon grease to oil the cast iron skillet for the cornbread that also calls for three teaspoons of cooking oil in the batter, which of course I used the bacon grease in place of the cooking oil.
For the first time there were NO leftovers of chili nor the cornbread, yum yum.

I save mine to flavor beans and greens. Don't use much, just enough to give them extra smokey flavor. I always keep it in the refrigerator in a mason jar. I don't use if for frying or cooking eggs or even in cornbread, just for beans and greens. :D
