I've attended wedding celebrations and birthday celebrations from other religions. I don't think those are what you are referring to. I think it would depend on my level of curiosity with that particular religion. I don't think I would attend as a celebrant.

Than what is he referring to? Wedding celebrations and birthday celebrations are functions. As are baptisms and celebrations into adulthood. Catholic Mass to you would be different as would a Baptist service to me, I do not think either is an issue to attend for us. :dunno

Does anyone ever really know what BS is talking about? stirthepot2 stirthepot2 stirthepot2

How's that for fence sitting? :)

I am not trying to fence sit, all those factors would apply.
As far as insulting my own beliefs, it would depend on the function I was invited to and if I felt I couldn't support it without being dishonest with myself or the other person, I wouldn't go.

Ditto. (Duh.)

Only the smart people.

I've attended some Native American religious functions. I don't have a problem with it at all. I would like to learn more about some of the eastern religions and attend their religious services. I have some Jewish students right now and would like to attend their service. Their mother attended and helped with the service at the local Lutheran church when they installed the new minister.

My problem with the question is that it is too broad. I don't have a hard and fast rule about it, and would have to judge on a case by case basis.

That's typically my stance with almost everything. :dunno

I've attended a Catholic funeral service and a Catholic wedding, which is kinda like going to the same thing.
Nooo, the services are different, but a wedding and funeral are kinda like the same thing.
The only difference is, that in one of those, the man knows he is dead.
:)

I would attend these functions in support of a friend, including a Mass. I have attended and limited my participation to what I am comfortable with (but remaining respectful), even at a Methodist church. I'm not sure if I could attend a Muslim service and remain true to my roots, so I'm not sure I'd do that. But, it'd really depend.

Agree with you, we can go in support of our family and friends without worshiping or risking our beliefs. I probably wouldn't attend any Muslim event during this day and age but I would be interested in eventually observing one just to mark it off my bucket list. As a Christian I wouldn't hesitate to invite someone of another faith to attend our upcoming Christmas event, and I would think those of other faiths would feel the same.

I would, and have, supported a friend by participating in a function that revolved around a religious celebration different from my own religious beliefs. For example a wedding or funeral involving someone of a different faith.

I would not participate in a worship service for a different god (lower case g).

Hope that makes sense.

Yet another reminder of just how lucky I was to have the childhood that I did.

Is it really so bad to go to a ceremony or celebration of another religion? Is it such a bad thing to better understand another human being? Just because you go and learn does not change you or your beliefs.

Would you participate in Ramadan with Muslim friends?

I believe Ramadan is a month on the Muslim calendar.

:wut I had a wonderful childhood.

Not criticizing anyone's childhood ... just appreciating mine more and more all of the time. Grateful for all of the diversity, experiences, exposure that I had.

It is, but would you participate with Muslim friends for one night of it?

Ramadan is a month of fasting and I know they can eat after sunset. (and before dawn?) I have never been asked to participate in the month of fasting by family so I highly doubt a friend would ask another friend to participate. :dunno I think you need a better "celebration" to ask her if she would participate.

There are so many "ifs" in this type of question, but I will attempt an answer.
If I was staying with a family who was Muslim, if it was Ramadan, if SD is correct that you don't eat during the day, if I was not going out of their house, then I out of respect for their holy days, I would eat when they did, if they asked me to.
There would be at least 5 "ifs" to make that happen, the biggest if all would me be staying with someone esle.

Agreed.

And just to get some knickers in a twist, I didn't even have a problem with the whatever it was they were talking about doing awhile back at Harvard (and in Oklahoma?) where they were gonna do some sort of satanic service as part of a class on different religious observances. It wasn't an actual service; it was a performance of a service, as it were. I'd have gone to it had I been in the class (although I might have sat near the door...heh). (I wouldn't go to an actual satanic service, although I suspect IRL those are few and far between.)

It's kind of like the weirdo dude that creeped deewee out the other day walking around the cemetery in Albuquerque - I didn't think he was creepy...I thought he was an attention-seeking weirdo. I serve a powerful God - the Creator of the Universe Who knows all things, is all powerful, and Who is everywhere. I think He can handle me going to a little service of a religion that doesn't believe in Him to learn something about it and/or to support a friend.

I do have a confession, however, and I'm not proud of it...I am far more biased against (and creeped out by) Jehovah's Witnesses than I am most any other religion. I'm terribly sorry if I offend anyone, but they just seem like a bunch of nuts and I tear up their silly flyers every time they leave one at the door. :soashamed
