Would you participate in a different religion\'s celebration?

Reading J-man's topic about the Mormons got me to thinking about this. If there was a religious celebration that was contrary to your own beliefs and you were invited, would you attend? For instance, as a Christian, we believe in one God in the 3 persons known as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Like a rope, 3 chords wrapped together to form one. Each with a distinct purpose but always together as one. We believe in salvation that only comes though Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit that dwells in us after conversion. Now, if there was a function in another religious set that contradicted these beliefs, would you attend? If the Mormons had a party celebrating Joseph Smith or Brigham Young, would you go? If the JW's had a Watchtower festival would you participate? How about a muslim prayer rug walk raising money for breast cancer? Would you feel you were compromising your own beliefs and would you feel you were insulting your own belief structure (disappointing God)? If you wouldn't feel differently, how does a celebration of a different religion fit in to what you currently believe?

It would depend on the function, the religion and the person inviting me.
How's that for fence sitting? :)

I am not trying to fence sit, all those factors would apply.
As far as insulting my own beliefs, it would depend on the function I was invited to and if I felt I couldn't support it without being dishonest with myself or the other person, I wouldn't go.

I would respectfully decline and would hope that the person inviting me would respectfully understand. If not, oh well. Their problem, not mine. :dunno

You mean my response got you thinking. ;)

I have attended many religious celebrations that were not my cup of tea.

(Jewish holidays, Hindu dinners, Buddhist ceremonies, and Catholic mass)

Nobody tried to convert me and a good time was had by all, no big deal.

:thumbsup and :ditto

edit: I have not been to a Hindu dinner. What was that like?

I've never been invited to such a thing, but I don't think I'd go. I did go to a couple of Catholic mass services (is that what they're called?) when I was a kid, because we had neighbors that were Catholic and they invited our family. I don't think that's what you're asking though.

I'd go to a Jewish celebration, depending on what it is. I don't see me going to any other religion's celebrations though.

(We stopped for cheeseburgers on the way home.)

When I was in Korea I did attend a few Hindu celebration although I have no idea what they were celebrating. I never felt it compromised my personal religious beliefs because i was not there to worship, only to observe. I did the same at some of the nice churches in Heidelberg when in Germany. When I met the Queen she was Lutheran, I suffered through a few of their services but luckily she finally "converted." I would never attend any Mormon or JW anything but I would consider attending a Muslim service as an observer only, mainly just to mark it off my bucket list and to say I've been to one.

You are the second person that has been to a Hindu celebration. I need to find a Hindu friend! :))

I've attended wedding celebrations and birthday celebrations from other religions. I don't think those are what you are referring to. I think it would depend on my level of curiosity with that particular religion. I don't think I would attend as a celebrant.

Than what is he referring to? Wedding celebrations and birthday celebrations are functions. As are baptisms and celebrations into adulthood. Catholic Mass to you would be different as would a Baptist service to me, I do not think either is an issue to attend for us. :dunno
