The friggin fortunes in my fortune cookies are bi-lingual now, too. Enough already. One side is English (and lucky numbers) and the other side is Spanish. Somebody please make it stop.

I have nothing against anyone coming here from another country (legally). What I do have a problem with is expecting us to adapt to them.

In the United States of America we speak and write the English language. As part of living here you should accept that and adapt just as you adapt to our laws.

I agree. You would think if a fortune in the cookie was going to be in two languages, they would be English and Chinese. I'm sick and tired of seeing Spanish and hearing Spanish every time I turn around.

But, but..... I thought we were all supposed to learn Manderian.

I speak two languages. English and Southern English and that's all I'm doin!! (stomping my foot) :)

gog8tors, let me set you straight on the language thing. You're supposed to already know Spanish because they are here. You will need to learn Chinese (doesn't matter if it's Mandarin or Cantonese) because they are coming to collect the money we owe them. :))

Yes, I just love the NEWER prerecorded messages....." Press 1 for Spanish, 2 for English ".....soooooo we are number two? Whose COUNTRY is this??

I was talkin' to one of them mexican folks the other day and could understand about every third word.

I said, "Don't you know the king's english, man"?

He looked at me and replied...."Of course he is" ::)

Well, in this particular case, I'm guessing it's a marketing decision based on their customers. HOWEVER, in general, I do agree with you. Ballots in other languages? NO!!! If I moved to another country that spoke a different language, I would expect to learn said language post haste and communicate with the natives in that language. Period.

I guarantee it's not a restaurant choice but a supplier choice but it is a supplier choice that is indicative of us being steamrolled over by a forced bilingualization of our country.

Well, I still ain't doin it. :p On the other hand my daughter is going to be ticked, after struggling so hard to learn French when she was in high school. :))

I took French in high school. It seemed so much "classier" than Spanish. :)) Now all I remember is how to ask someone to go to the beach (which btw is the first phrase we learned). As an adult, France doesn't hold near the attraction.

I might suggest that it is not due to a forced anything or a demand from anyone. If someone does not speak English well, they will not patronize places that do not offer options in thier native language. It's like that world wide. Most non-English speaking countries offer information in English as well because it opens up their market to a greater customer base and therefore, greater profit. To that end, with the location of most countries, it behooves businesses to offer information in several different languages - which they do - happily, because they make money from it. Here, we only have one noticeable population to cater to due soley to location. And, we grumble about it much more than elsewhere, I would suspect due to political issues associated with this same location. But, considering the growing population of people who are native Spanish speakers, like it or not, it's a smart move moneywise. And certainly no one is suggesting you will ever HAVE to learn another language - just don't read the other side. ;)

So I think Mean is saying it's a marketing ploy to get Spanish speaking people to eat Chinese food........... :p

Maybe the fortune cookie makers are getting prepared for the take over. :))

Chinese food seems to be popular among Mexicans; especially those with buffets.

I don't believe I am, I spent years in marketing. For profit businesses need no more pressure to initiate new tactics than the promise of the almighty dollar. That is what is behind your fortune cookie conspiracy. As for the changing face (and primary language) of the population that is behind that market surge, change has been a part of this countries history since it began - and so has complaining about it. It is what it is.

You should see the signs here - 3 sometimes 4 or more languages. Menus you have to thumb through pages just to get to your section. If I felt like I had to learn the language, I would certainly make a greater effort, but they cater to non-natives here so it is completely uneccessary. Is the government here pressuring them into it for some political reason? Sometimes, but not for any reason other than why the businesses do it on thier own. They couldn't care less about our comfort and well-being. It's done because they want our $$$$ - no matter what language we speak.

Big picture? Don't expect businesses to cut off their market base in the name of controlling a national identity - that's not their job nor their responsibility and it would be stupid of them to do so. The government needs to step up and close the borders COMPLETELY, until they get a grip on the current population, thier identity and their needs. When that happens and we, the American citizens, are getting our needs met by the governent we fund, THEN and ONLY then will we be able to have rational flow of immigrants and emmigrants to stabilize the population. From there, we continue to monitor and control the effect of world events on said population, re-establishing our national identity and all of the little nit-picky details that go with it - like what language gets the number 1 spot in the phone que.

The fortune cookie thing is a token of what is happening to our society. Period. It was not about the marketing it was not about the cookie it was not about the fortune. (Though I will say with 100% certainty that this particular restaurant did not make a conscious business decision to switch to bilingual cookies.)

So again, you missed the bigger picture. I take partial responsibility for that though since you don't know me and I didn't spell it out. ;)

I have found that most foreigners are just like cue balls.....

The harder you hit them, the more english you get out of them! :D
