I don't see a lot of other economic impact; people staying in our motel, eating at our restaurants, etc. The airport could help that, but I'm not confident that it will. Between the poor handling of it by the government and now the backlash (some of that necessary) from the residents, it's pretty must a wasteland for now.
We have one big factor against us out here; we don't have an interstate highway. That's also a blessing in some ways, just depends how you look at it. We need large industry and / or major attractions out here to kick start the economy. I think more of this could have been accomplished had our politicians invested taxpayer money more wisely.
Was it really handled poorly? Some say it was done properly and accordingly to the NDA's I'm sure were in place from the very start. Maybe, and everything I've seen so far, was that it's the same core people who fought all the residential development for so many years in this County are now stirring the pot because they were boarded and "this is what they do" for entertainment. Not to mention another major airline company wanting to assert their control to prevent any competition from coming into "their market".
And what taxpayer money was invested improperly? Which "our politicians" are you talking about? As there were about 10 different "govt's" from all three levels (local, state and federal) involved and who knows how many politicians.
Let me say first off...I am not anti-airport. I think it will eventually become a plus for the county.
Now...yes, a lot of things have been poorly handled, this included. They should have been more transparent from the start. Add to that millions of taxpayer dollars that were spent in the wrong places and it's no wonder that we have some of the problems that we face now. The reservoir, something we really need, is stalled. Several major corporations won't build out here because of a lack of sanitary sewers. So year, lots of things have been poorly handled.
Sewer systems and the reservoir are not related. Totally 2 different systems at opposite ends of the "use spectrum". There was never a "sewer system" planned for this.
Please share what is being mishandled? Inquiring minds want to know. Not the misinformation going around but real facts.
You're a business man, surely you understand what NDA's mean and how they are used? To those who are not familiar with NDA's, this process may "appear" to be transparent but when in fact they are following a legal contract as to what and how info is disclosed.
What are these "millions of dollars" you speak of that were mishandled? Where did they come from? What were they spent on? Again, I ask for proven facts and not the misinformation being passed around as fact.
And you do know that if you have concerns about how the County does things, all you have to do is contact David Austin's office and they will set you up an appointment to meet with him and the County Manager. I've done it several times. I've also met with department heads several times. I've never got the feeling anyone was hiding anything or had improper intentions. It never hurts to ask.
I never thought you would fall for the misinformation being pushed at every corner without checking to see if it was true or not, I guess I was wrong.
Easy dude. I am not in the crowd you speak of and I'm more involved than you know. I just don't put all that out in public for various reasons.
I am in construction, I know that sewers and the reservoir are not related. Never indicated that they were.
Regardless...many major businesses, especially restaurants, are not building out here because of the lack of sewer systems. The Paulding health department is very hard to deal with, and they make it so expensive for restaurants with septic tanks, it's not worth it to them to build. Some may not even stay.
Money spent on things like the half-empty courthouse and some of the other wasteful projects could have gone to projects like utilities that would encourage big business to come here. They will usually not build where the infrastructure won't support them. In some cases, it's not even that some of these projects are bad, but that they were funded before other more needed things (like utilities) were. This is not the kind of planning that brings industry in and creates jobs.
Paulding has it's quota of fast food restaurants - no more, please!!!
One in-particular is 92 and Ridge. Several businesses looked at going in on those corners but didn't because of no sewers.
The parkway is getting congested, we need business growth in other areas to bring in jobs. We need manufacturing and distribution, and they usually want gas and sewer.
But, we DON'T need more restaurants, unless they are fine dining establishments.
Look...I'm not in the crowd that thinks our local government has done EVERYTHING wrong. One of the more powerful politicians in the county is even a good friend of mine. But mistakes have been made that have kept business from coming here, and money has been spent that could have been spent better. I'm a member of the local business community and I see and hear things. We can't correct our mistakes and move forward unless we acknowledge them and learn from them.
I'm not saying that our county hasn't made mistakes, but I am saying that they are doing some good. And, if some of those businesses they have kept out of Paulding are fast food places, that is wonderful!!
As for fine dining, I know Ruth's Chris or something comparable isn't in our future, but the hubby and I were big fans of The Cotton Gin when we moved out here many years ago. The food was amazing. While that would never qualify as "fine dining" by Atlanta standards, it was the type of place I would love to see succeed in Paulding. Unfortunately, the owner had an issue with paying his taxes so he was shut down...
I never said they weren't doing some good either.
Some people just tend to go off the deep end.
