Somebody over at the "other place" just said that Brushy Mountain Road is a "convenient" route to access 278 from Emerson.

:laugh :laugh :laugh

Where the heck is a Brushy Mountain Rd?

It is possibly the most inconvenient road in the entire county and it's full of giant potholes.

It runs from Rockmart thru middle of nowhere Braswell and ends up on Highway 61 North.

:)) I will need a map for this info. Off to Google. Thanks.

There will be jobs from it, no doubt some of them for Paulding people.

I don't see a lot of other economic impact; people staying in our motel, eating at our restaurants, etc. The airport could help that, but I'm not confident that it will. Between the poor handling of it by the government and now the backlash (some of that necessary) from the residents, it's pretty must a wasteland for now.

We have one big factor against us out here; we don't have an interstate highway. That's also a blessing in some ways, just depends how you look at it. We need large industry and / or major attractions out here to kick start the economy. I think more of this could have been accomplished had our politicians invested taxpayer money more wisely.

Was it really handled poorly? Some say it was done properly and accordingly to the NDA's I'm sure were in place from the very start. Maybe, and everything I've seen so far, was that it's the same core people who fought all the residential development for so many years in this County are now stirring the pot because they were boarded and "this is what they do" for entertainment. Not to mention another major airline company wanting to assert their control to prevent any competition from coming into "their market".

And what taxpayer money was invested improperly? Which "our politicians" are you talking about? As there were about 10 different "govt's" from all three levels (local, state and federal) involved and who knows how many politicians.

Let me say first off...I am not anti-airport. I think it will eventually become a plus for the county.

Now...yes, a lot of things have been poorly handled, this included. They should have been more transparent from the start. Add to that millions of taxpayer dollars that were spent in the wrong places and it's no wonder that we have some of the problems that we face now. The reservoir, something we really need, is stalled. Several major corporations won't build out here because of a lack of sanitary sewers. So year, lots of things have been poorly handled.

Sewer systems and the reservoir are not related. Totally 2 different systems at opposite ends of the "use spectrum". There was never a "sewer system" planned for this.

Please share what is being mishandled? Inquiring minds want to know. Not the misinformation going around but real facts.

You're a business man, surely you understand what NDA's mean and how they are used? To those who are not familiar with NDA's, this process may "appear" to be transparent but when in fact they are following a legal contract as to what and how info is disclosed.

What are these "millions of dollars" you speak of that were mishandled? Where did they come from? What were they spent on? Again, I ask for proven facts and not the misinformation being passed around as fact.

And you do know that if you have concerns about how the County does things, all you have to do is contact David Austin's office and they will set you up an appointment to meet with him and the County Manager. I've done it several times. I've also met with department heads several times. I've never got the feeling anyone was hiding anything or had improper intentions. It never hurts to ask.

I never thought you would fall for the misinformation being pushed at every corner without checking to see if it was true or not, I guess I was wrong.

But doesn't our county have a surplus of money? I believe they do and that would show they have handled money in a wise fashion?

I do agree that this could have and should have been handled better.

As of now I am still on the fence with the airport, leaning towards the have it because I am not against having commercial flights. The problem I have had from the start and it has only progressed is what are the real facts? I have heard and read much from both sides and actually both sides have gone way too far in mud slinging to prove their point and it leaves us to wonder, what is the fact, what is the rumor, what is the what if, and dredging through studies that are old, not applicable and just not worth my time and effort in the end. :dunno

The County is required by State Law to maintain a reserve fund. Actual amount I'm not sure of. When I use to attend all the meetings, it ranged from $18M to $34M. There are also some requirements from the Bond holders for the County to maintain a set reserve.

The whole key to the success or failure of the airport and the ability to draw folks from the sports complex is that Paulding must have something to offer. If we don't have the hospitality industries in place to make Paulding an attractive drive from the sports complex (hotels, good restaurants, entertainment), even if SC field is up and running, there are going to be those that simply stay close to the interstate so they can make the drive to Hartsfield. AND, if we don't make it lucrative for businesses to relocate or build in Paulding (the airport, industrial parks, quality road access, along with better hospitality options), then we should just go ahead and turn the airport into a parking lot.

And why would any "lucrative businesses" want to locate in Paulding when they are going to be met with angry residents and never ending lawsuits?

You think the airport is causing trouble now, wait until a major developer starts clearing 10,000 acres to build an office/industrial park.

I'm cool with private development as long as there is proper zoning in place... not cool with the wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars.

;)

What wasteful spending of taxpayer's dollars are you speaking of?

Easy dude. I am not in the crowd you speak of and I'm more involved than you know. I just don't put all that out in public for various reasons.

I am in construction, I know that sewers and the reservoir are not related. Never indicated that they were.

Regardless...many major businesses, especially restaurants, are not building out here because of the lack of sewer systems. The Paulding health department is very hard to deal with, and they make it so expensive for restaurants with septic tanks, it's not worth it to them to build. Some may not even stay.

Money spent on things like the half-empty courthouse and some of the other wasteful projects could have gone to projects like utilities that would encourage big business to come here. They will usually not build where the infrastructure won't support them. In some cases, it's not even that some of these projects are bad, but that they were funded before other more needed things (like utilities) were. This is not the kind of planning that brings industry in and creates jobs.

I'm mainly referring to other areas not on the parkway, and not just fast-food.

One in-particular is 92 and Ridge. Several businesses looked at going in on those corners but didn't because of no sewers.

The parkway is getting congested, we need business growth in other areas to bring in jobs. We need manufacturing and distribution, and they usually want gas and sewer.

Some of the ones who won't build are better dining. But we're not going to get Ruth Chris in Paulding, the demographics just don't support that price range.

Look...I'm not in the crowd that thinks our local government has done EVERYTHING wrong. One of the more powerful politicians in the county is even a good friend of mine. But mistakes have been made that have kept business from coming here, and money has been spent that could have been spent better. I'm a member of the local business community and I see and hear things. We can't correct our mistakes and move forward unless we acknowledge them and learn from them.

So, if the County has spent $$millions$$ for a sewer system to vacant land, would not the citizens of this County have called it wasteful spending? This County does not spend one dime to build new sewer lines, it has always been funded by fees charged to developers, or developers built the systems (to County spec's) and then turned it over to the County. The airport sewer system is the only line I know of built by the County, ever.

So, what of the County had only built the Courthouse and Admin building to meet the then current demands? And what if we see a return to the rapid growth we saw in the 90's and early 2000's, causing the County to add on to the buildings at 3 to 6 times the price for what they did then? Would that have been called wasteful spending?

The County will always be...damned if the do, damned if they don't. Everybody wants to complain after the fact but not get involved in the approval process. I commend naturegirl for getting involved now, a little late for this matter but she is learning how things work. I hope she continues long after these issues are over.

I fully understand the issues with some businesses wanting to locate in Paulding. I may have been in residential real estate but the wife has been in commercial real estate a lot longer. And many of the same issues we brought up in Leadership Paulding that I completed in 2000 have yet to be addressed, but I took the time to find out why. Reread your comment about the sewer and the reservoir, you did tie the two together.

Yall gots me fired up with all this misinformation you're getting from that other site. Let them wallar in their own poo. It's been public info for well over 15 years and open to anyone wanting to find it. But this has not always been the case.

Paulding has it's quota of fast food restaurants - no more, please!!!

You didn't know about Cobb County running sewer thru there? Only been in the works for 5 or 6 years. Per orders from the State, Cobb is extending a main sewer line down Brownsville road that will cover that corner of the County. Developers will be responsible (as they have been, since forever) for connecting to this main line.

The parkway is getting congested, we need business growth in other areas to bring in jobs. We need manufacturing and distribution, and they usually want gas and sewer.

But, we DON'T need more restaurants, unless they are fine dining establishments.

I'm not saying that our county hasn't made mistakes, but I am saying that they are doing some good. And, if some of those businesses they have kept out of Paulding are fast food places, that is wonderful!!

As for fine dining, I know Ruth's Chris or something comparable isn't in our future, but the hubby and I were big fans of The Cotton Gin when we moved out here many years ago. The food was amazing. While that would never qualify as "fine dining" by Atlanta standards, it was the type of place I would love to see succeed in Paulding. Unfortunately, the owner had an issue with paying his taxes so he was shut down...

There have been many mistakes and concerted efforts over the years to prevent business and commercial development in the County. But almost all of that was done more the 20 years ago by a certain person with a road named after him....that he built 3 subdivisions on, that were approved in a 14 day lapse of rezoning moratorium that only 3 people knew about at the time. One of those people was in out State Govt.

There were other alternatives on the courthouse building. They built too big and they spent too much even for what they got. The project was riddled with problems; poor design, etc.
