How low will Trump go?

If DeSantis chose to wait four more years to run for POTUS, he would be scrutinized and attacked by the Democrats. Maybe even worse than the attacks he's receiving from Trump now. We saw what the Dems did to Kavanaugh.
But he wouldn't be going head to head with Trump.

Whether you like Trump or not, he has a very loyal and sizable base that is behind him all the way.

I don't know if Trump would be a lousy president again or not. I know he would be annoying but hopefully his policies would be good.

However, first he has to get elected and I simply don't think he can beat Biden or especially someone like Newsom.

True, but that sizable base wasn't enough to get him elected in 2020 against a horrible candidate and it won't be enough to get him elected in 2024.

Yes, but it's still enough to cause DeSantis a lot of grief. OTOH, if DeSantis waits and runs the next time, most Trumpers will likely get behind him.

Do you agree that DeSantis has a better chance of beating Biden/Newsom/whomever?

If the answer is yes, are you suggesting that the Republicans shouldn't run their best candidate in 2024 which would increase their chances of losing?

Gotta get on the ballot first, then have to win the Primary to get the Republican nomination. We're two years out and already eating our own before we even know whose names are in the pot.

In a normal situation, yes.

But anytime Trump is in the mix, the rules change. EX: In the 2016 race, I voted for Cruz in the primary. Cruz was the true conservative and even then I was correctly concerned about Trump being polarizing. But because Cruz and Trump were at odds in the primary, the hardcore Trumpers turned on Cruz and got vicious with him. Trump actually financed the site Prntly, and they were the ones who floated the rumors about Cruz and prostitutes, which was not true but a lot of damage was done, and the hardcore Trumpers contributed to that. Ultimately, Trump defeated Cruz in the primary, and the rest is history.

I'm afraid the same thing will happen to DeSantis if he runs against Trump; the Trumpers will turn on him and try to destroy the man.

I wish Trump would understand that and not bash and lie about a very popular and successful Republican governor who hasn't even announced if he is running yet.

I can't argue that, but Democrats will do as bad or worse to whomever the nominee is.

I guess the Republicans just shouldn't try their best to win in 2024 just to appease Trump's ego.

There is a simple easy solution to this entire problem. One that would result in the Republicans having a better chance of winning in 2024, wouldn't alienate Trumpsters, and would even make those that dislike Trump begin to like him more.....he could announce he has changed his mind about running and endorse DeSantis. Problem solved and everyone is happy.

Or DS could choose to wait for the next cycle and endorse DT. Then if the "never Trumpers" can't get behind DT they can blame themselves for their pettiness. After all, DT supporters are expected to back the nominee should Trump lose in the Primary.

But that wouldn't give Republicans the best chance to win. You may not agree, but I think DeSantis has a better chance of winning than Trump. Trump's negatives are too high and he won't get as many independents.

No, I don't agree, and there are many of us.

Yes, but that won't have much effect on GOP voters.

Good luck with that. I still say we'll have to go through the primary system and let that work itself out.

Trump has a huge ace in the hole. All they have to ask over and over and over again, 'Are you really better off and safer now, or when was in office?? If the answer is YES, vote for Biden,,, otherwise vote for me and I will fix it again.' That is a massive direct correlation which most of us have no problem with the logic of keeping this mess or going back to pre-Biden. He should be attacking Biden at every turn but he still has to win the primary, and he will have opponents there. I look at the harsh words he has for potential opponents, is a lot of Raw Meat for his people at his rallies, but the news media does not keep that in context.
I wish it was a better situation and things looked cheerful for us, but it isn't. Trying to get rid of Trump now is like flushing the toilet before the last turd is dropped and the paperwork is done. It behooves us to wait and see who is running for the republicans and democrats before coming to grips with how to take back the White House, and not particularly who is best for the White House.

If DJT is the last man standing which it is way too early to determine, he will lose. My opinion is based on the Hillary example. DJT has more negatives with the independents than any candidate I can think of besides the Hildabeast. YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO WIN THE INDEPENDENTS TO WIN REGARDLESS OF PARTY AFFILIATION. The only ace Donny Two Times has in his pocket is the economy and any other candidate not named Joe Biden holds the same ace.

I think after 4 years of the current disaster the Independents will gladly come around to liking Trump. Unless of course there are more Democratic leaning Independents than Republican leaning. In that case it doesn't matter who runs as the Republican nominee. Oh, and don't forget the segment of Independents who vote for the candidate who offers the most "free handouts" (yes, Independents do that as well as Democrats and some Republicans).

Independents are swing voters. They'll often vote for the candidate they least hate. Trump needed them in 2020 but didn't get them, hence he lost.
