The brochure was made for managers, whether the managers passed it along or not, I do not know.

In context of this article alone, where is that stated and how do you arrive at that conclusion?
Why would I use only one article? Isn't that just what we say here all the time, people just listen to what is in front of them and do not look into the facts themselves?

I do not take one article posted as fact. It came across as slanted and seemed to have great "sound bites" for people to get up in arms about. It did not even have the brochure for us to read. (at the time, could have been updated) So I checked into the info.I looked up different articles and came across the brochure. Posted it for others here to read. Another article states it went to managers and since the brochure specifically addresses that on the front page ........

Fair enough, I did miss it, never saw your link but went back and read it. Without it I was confused but that's not unusual. Nice to see others here do cross reference and use multiple sources. We're all good now, I will sit down and shut up.

:spitchick OH MY GOSH! You have me laughing. I had no idea you had not read it. You had one of my moments. :))

Substitute the word "black" for LGBT in that memo. Now how does it read to you?

Is all that necessary to have a race-friendly workplace? No, you just don't tolerate racism. We had to deal with that in my business, we had one employee who thought it was funny to make racial jokes toward a black employee. I didn't send out a memo like that, I just told them that crap wouldn't be tolerated in this company and I'd fire anyone who did it. Problem solved without a dog and pony show.

There was a time it would have applied.

And handling it that way would have created more problems than it solved.

GD, do not think that there was not sensitivity training for just that.

Sensitivity training causes resentment.

Possibly, but I know that most Fortune 500 companies have it. :dunno

It's CYA. Just so they can say they did it.

Forcing an employee to sit through a class doesn't change their beliefs. All it might do is put them on notice that certain things aren't allowed. And you can do that through company policy.

It might be CYA, but I can tell you some definitely need the class! :))

Really though, were people offended by these types of directives (training, classes, brochures, etc) when it was woman, African Americans, divorce, unwed mothers, etc? (Though I actually do remember lots of discussion regarding insensitivity after Murphy Brown had a baby on tv! :)) )

Geeze, you're old.

LOL

You are NOT that far from me! :tapfoot2

(P.S. I was a teen, were you? ;) )

I was still a baby

I made it to page two of the comments before y'all made me have to get up and go get coffee...

My take on this: This is standard procedure. I didn't see anything unusual about it nor did I see anything that we wouldn't encourage our clients to do (especially if they knew that they had a number of LBGT employees). Is it sad that we have to tell and train folks on how to behave in the workplace? Yes. But pamphlets and training are just one tool that employers can use to protect themselves from huge payouts and it's gives them the tools to be able to quickly fire employees when they violate company policy on that issue.

NOW, everyone needs to post a gay topic today just to bug the beejeebus out of BS... :Ninja

We're only half-way, we're only on page 5 and have 5 more to go. Somebody come up with more comments to this one before it dies. All "gay" related topics have to reach 10 pages to be legit.

I'm late to the party (as usual) so I'll just say that I completely agree with HoneyBunny's summation. Madea also said what I was thinking....there's too much "personal" talk going on and not enough WORK!

This brochure does bother me on so many levels - as does most PC propaganda.

Apparently, employees (managers or otherwise) no longer have freedom of speech at the DOJ (of all places!) Silence is a form of speech, and if someone doesn't like it....oh well.

I just wish people would stop being so offended by every little thing! As we've discussed before, I don't see people being treated poorly for their race, sexual preference, religion, etc. in this day and age. If and when it happens, it's pretty easy to stop it. I just don't see the widespread problem that would require a directive such as this.

Some people like you and some people don't. What we need to have is CONFIDENCE TRAINING for employees. Be who you are, embrace yourself, do your job, and forget about those who choose not to like you.

I encounter people who dislike me everyday. My skin's too white; I talk about Jesus too much; I brag on my kids all the time; I like cheesy music; I don't like cheese; yada yada yada. Who cares? If YOU are confident with who you are, that's all that matters!

Google jury verdicts and settlements in sexual harassment, racial discrimination, national origin discrimination, disability discrimination, etc. Then you will see the widespread problem. It has kept me employed for over 20 years...

1.) IF I love that you don't see people being treated poorly for those things. That means that you are in a good place. Sadly though, it absolutely does still go on even in this day and age.

2.) PREACH ON about the confidence training!!! If we can spend this much time and attention in telling people how to be aware of other people and how not to knock them down why can't we spend a little on how to help build ourselves up?? ?? ??

Maybe I wear rose colored glasses, or maybe because I have lived through such horrific events in my own life (the kind movies are made of) I think people really could "shake off" a lot of issues. I think a lot is perpetuated for the very purpose of keeping the issue at the forefront. I don't live in a box, but overall MOST people are very tolerant of all people (if not their lifestyles.)

And thank you. Maybe I'll write my own brochure! :thumbsup

That doesn't make it any less of an issue. :dunno But, I'm of the opinion is that these issues were created because we started letting people get away with not taking personal responsibility for their actions. Because of that, folks decided that it couldn't possibly be their fault that they were fired so they hired an attorney. Then the company has to hire an attorney, and then I have work to do... It's the circle of life...

So now we hire more lawyers because we don't want to lose our jobs over not AFFIRMING a lifestyle to which we object. I have an idea, let's make this brochure for managers: "FOCUS ON MAKING MONEY FOR THE COMPANY"

But that would never fly because merely the thought of it implies WORK, and why work, when you don't have tooooooooo.

Dude! We're discussing government employees, they are never going to WORK (in all caps). You are lucky is they "work". :laugh
