Braves 2018....

I suspect...

If the Bravos get into the playoffs...

Many of us (including Mr 'Who')... grin

Will take an interest in our local team.

Personally... I hope they are in first place by a margin, by the time the regular season ends...
A little break while the other 'barely made it' teams battle it out...
Would be a good thing for our team!

Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!

They are now 2 games ahead of the 2nd place Phillies.

From the local morning headlines.... it sounds like the fans got more than a baseball game last evening...

97 mph fastball to the elbow on the first pitch. If he was told to throw at Acuna by the coaching staff they should be fined and fired. That was just disgusting.

Yeah... we will never know who 'instigated' that incident... however it is not acceptable nor sportsmanlike behavior.

And I agree... the pitcher should get a mandatory vacation until spring training...
WITHOUT PAY!

Reminds me of when pro football players used to sack QB's...
That was and is just wrong!

When your team sucks and is in last place at 22 games back and you're a sucky pitcher with a 3-12 record for the year (22-33 career record) it really doesn't matter if you're ejected or suspended. The team can't do any worse without you and it's the only 15-minutes of fame you'll see until announcing your retirement.

I'm an old school baseball fan and plunking a batter is part of the game but normally only done in retaliation after showing up the other pitcher or team AND when your team is actually in contention of winning something other than last place. This may actually bond the Braves even closer for the upcoming play-off games. Thankfully the injury doesn't appear severe and hopefully he can get back in the line-up soon.

O.K. Here's my take on it. Acuna learned two valuable lessons here. First, when you go on a home run hitting rampage, especially against one team, you're going to make opposing pitchers irate. Said pitchers will compensate with the 'Brush back' pitch, and when that doesn't work, you get plunked... PLAN ON IT!!! That's the way baseball has worked for that last 60 years that I remember. Secondly, he learned that when getting plunked is inevitable, don't try to block it with your arm/elbow!!! Lift your arms, tighten up and take one for the team,,, remember, it is part of the game.
Thus endith the lessons.

Now, for those of you who think it should not be part of the game. There are specific rules regarding the plunk, and the umpires followed them. It is the batters responsibility to protect him/herself when in the batters box. What else do you want, chicken wire cages, like Red Neck honky-tonks??? Lighten up, it's part of the game, and don't come back with, "Well, it shouldn't be!", because I don't want Baseball watered down. It is a dangerous game and the players know it when they take the field, specially at the highest level!
Thus endith the rant.

One of the first things we taught the kids was how to turn away from a wild pitch or one thrown at them. If you have time to swing the bat you have time to react to a beamer. Agree, "tradition" of the game.

Just a couple of additional thoughts. Three homers against your team doesn't seem to be reason enough to "plunk" a guy, and a 97 mph fastball isn't the pitch to do it with. Being a good baseball player isn't an offense. Brush backs are part of the game, as is the retaliatory tag on the ass when a guy slid hard into your teammate or otherwise colored outside the lines. That wasn't the case here, this was just a pussy taking it out on the best player on the other team because his team sucks.
