Paulding County Reservoir a reality with State funding

Lets hope it stays. The Governor's proposed budget is set to meet with some resistance on both sides of the aisle this year.

There was talk of this in the media earlier in the week. They mentioned funding being declared for water projects in a few area counties, including Paulding.

From what I have read on this, it's a loan that will have to be paid back to the state. Not sure how that is going to happen but get ready for another millage rate increase.

Where's deerslayer when we need him?? He has first hand info on this. Paulding is going to get a lot of resistance from surrounding counties, get ready for a battle.

From what I've been told, all that has been worked out. Part of the delay has been caused by the Corp of Engineers requiring the County to offer a partnership to all the surrounding cities and Counties. To make a regional system. They all turned it down, so we are good to go.

Here I is ;D
Just to make sure everyone is on the same page.Water from the Etowah River must be pumped into the reservoir to fill it.Richland creek does not have the flow to sustain a reservoir.

Everyone down stream from redtop dam is gonna try to stop this, starting with the city of Cartersville.
Why Cartersville too?.....glad you asked.

Where does the city of Cartersville wastewater go?.....Right back into the etowah river, where there must enough flow to mix with their treated effluent.

The city of Rome has an intake on the Etowah, they are gonna pitch a fit and try to stop us from taking 35 million gallons a day from the river.

You know the state of Alabama will take us to court over water rights.

Just look at the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir, that project went over budget by 100 million dollars and they still haven't made a penny.Matter of fact, the city of Canton wants to sell their share because it's too expensive.

Paulding County has at least 25 years left in a contract with Cobb County Marietta Water Authority to buy our water from them. Most folks want it built so we will have our own water supply.I haven't seen any applications for permitting of a water treatment plant.Yeah, there are drawing showing a plant, but it's just for decoration.

I would love to have that reservoir built,it's very near my house and would love to have a water treatment plant that I could run.I just don't think it's gonna happen in the near future.

They are not going to get approval unless additional effluent runs back into the Etowah basin, period. Neither the State nor the Feds will go along with that. The reservoir must be tied to that plant TDS is talking about, and while that plant is part of the long range regional planning, it is not, to my knowledge, anywhere near final approval. I don't think it even has an EIS. Paulding does have approval to increase the volume from it's existing Dallas plants to make up for the loss of the spray fields, but this is small potatoes. I will be very surprised if we see a new reservoir within 10 years, but it sure would be nice.

I would like to add one point.

The intake pipe of PAULDING is DOWNSTREAM and ACROSS from the CARTERSVILLE outlet pipe!!!

Boy that was a stroke of genious planning there.

I know thedeerslayer has a lot of information on this, he currently is heavily involved with where we get our water now. He's a great guy and has stayed with this almost from the inception of the idea. We just need to be practical and believe it's not a "done deal" as much as we would like it to be. From the time this was initially approved and studies done, there has been a lot of growth, especially in Cartersville. It's understandable surrounding governments have something to say.

PCGOPexaminer,

I think this article should container a disclaimer that you are openly supporting Heath in a contested Republican primary runoff. The article should also mention that 10 years ago, Mr. Heath LOST $45 million in state funding dedicated to the Haralson County reservoir which would have benefited the entire district. But for Heath's lack of leadership in 2002, we would already had a reservoir in the district today. A fair and balanced article would have also pointed out that Mr. Heath's runoff competitor, Republican Bill Carruth, actually initiated the Richland Creek reservoir in 1999 and has been working with the County to secure the funding since then.

You are grasping at straws.

And I really do want the reservoir and I would love for a water treatment plant to be built close by.

I saw the plans that Jerry had drawn up for a park and bike trails connecting with the sliver comet.

But as I see what's going on up at Canton,Paulding County could very well lose our butts in the project.

I know 2 years ago the County Manager, Mike Smith, told me an estimated cost of $30M to $40M, now the latest press release is saying $89M? Something has changed big time.

I don't know the latest plan, it's changed a few times, but one plan was to pipe in the water from the river to the reservior and then to a treatment plant in Cobb. To be added to the system supply and Cobb will pay Paulding for their supply of untreated water.

Don't remember how the waste water will be handled.

Here is a map of new reservoirs and proposed reservoirs that would use the etowah river.Look who is last in line.
BTW-The sharp mountain creek site is 1000 acres that has been owned by ccmwa for 20 years.....

I appreciate your input, deerslayer. Yeah, I'm guessin' this won't happen as long as I live here. I can guarantee Rome/Floyd County is going to put up a huge stink.

Yep, but at least we are the only one downstream from the Altoona dam.

I believe all the surrounding Counties and Cities have been allowed to have their input and join or reject a joint partnership. By rejecting they loose their option to file against the project. This was already required by the Corp of Engineers. I think all that is left is final project plans approval and arraigned funding for construction.
