No winter break for Paulding

Before even finding out how many of the days even need to be made up, if any ...

That's what I don't get...why wouldn't you wait to see if you got a waiver from the state? Doesn't affect me one way or the other, but it sure doesn't make sense to me.

We're fortunate to not be among those that had pre-paid plans but I'm still not terribly impressed. Oh well, nothing to be done about it now. Mine will be there and we'll figure out another time to get down to visit family in Florida, hopefully before it is too late.

I think this is the best solution. These kids get too many week long breaks from school as it is. More reason to just start school the Tuesday after Labor Day; give only Thurs and Friday off for Thanksgiving; give them only two weeks for the Christmas and New Years Holiday; and then one other weak for Spring Break. We would save a lot more money.

I'm focused. Though this decision will not please everyone, our new state rep is already second guessing the decision the BoE made in this matter. I read a comment she made on FB.

She responded to a friend's comment about the break being cancelled.

Paulette Rakestraw Braddock - A lot of people that had vacations planned are very upset - this wasn't their only choice to make up the days - they couldve used some
Half days and other days off instead - they are there to make tough decisions and sometimes some creative ...solutions work best to best serve the student and keep constituents happy

It was a bs move to do the vote tonight without letting the community know they were moving it up. It was scheduled for 25 January.

I should point out that you do not have to disagree with the points that Representative Braddock raises in order to agree with the Paulding BOE decision.

They absolutely should have looked at other options. The February break was not a new addition to our school calendar. It is one that people have come to expect as a regular item and plan vacations, doctor appointments, surgeries, etc. around it. Of course school is about education but to just wipe out the whole week with a rushed vote without any consideration to comments from the community or use of alternative ways to regain the instructional time was pretty crappy in my view.

Were you going to be there on the 25th?
Probably not as it is virtually impossible for me to get childcare in the evenings. The issues that I raise aren't my personal issues. I don't have to personally experience a problem in order to be able to see it, be compassionate to it, argue for it. My kids will be in school regardless of when the BOE decides that the time is to be made up. I put their education first.

I have to believe most attentive parents and people of goodwill in the county will ultimately feel the same way.

I would hope so. Their decision is certainly not harmful to my children and so, as a parent, it is my job to then ensure that my children's butts are warming their seats in their classes.

for me I really don't care that they took it cause we had no plans anyways. What bugs me is how it was quickly voted on without any other options considered or to even wait to see if all of the days had to be made up.

But I feel for the parents who this will affect that already had stuff planned. But I guess on a positive note, they have a month to re-adjust

I'm sure they did look at other options to include extending the school year out another week.

Why assume this was the only option they looked at?

cause Fox in my own personal opinion, this is Thursday of the week we have been out. How on earth did they have time to meet on it today and talk about all the other options and then vote on it when the subject of snow days wasn't even on the agenda and was brought up at the end of the meeting by Cliff Cole (Im going on what a friend that works for the school system was told). Again just my opinion, but I don't see how they really had time to think about it and give it proper thought process. Also if Im not mistaken, when we had the floods in 09 since it was declared a state of emergency, wasn't some of those days not made up? Why didn't they wait to see what the state said?

Again, doesn't affect me at all, my kids will be in school that week so I'll quit whining about it and move on about my business :)
