What\'s for dinner?

I've had a crockpot full of homemade French onion soup (with guiness beer) on all day, and I have a loaf of hot, homemade, fresh out of the oven crusty bread. Ill slice it and top it with Irish cheddar and pop it under the broiler before topping the soup with it.

Nom nom nom I can't wait to eat.

We're having a salad on the side.

Sausage and cabbage with stewed squash with onions and field peas. Yummy.

I'd give anything for any of that. My dinner was nasty. :(

We had salad. BabyB had bread and shredded cheese. :))

What happened? I was a little surprised by the cheddar for french onion but surely that didn't ruin it.

I still don't know. I have leftover shredded buffalo chicken but don't know what I want to do with it yet. Made lettuce wraps with it last night.

No, it wasn't the cheese. It was the soup. It was not good. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good, either. But not something you want to eat a lot of. I don't know if it was cheddar - I used Kerrygold Dubliner cheese. It's a bit strong for me, but that is what the recipe called for. I ended up eating three pieces of bread with melted cheese dip pies in the broth. Ill never, ever make it again. :))

I was so mad because I started the bread yesterday! And I've been looking forward to this, it sounded (and smelled!) so good!

This is the recipe I used. I don't recommend it.

That recipe is very different from any I've done before. I'm sorry that it didn't work out as you had hoped. Few things as frustrating as working hard and waiting so long only to be let down.

If you have a good recipe for French onion soup will you please share?

I use Tyler Florence's recipe if you want to look that one up. I believe wine was the base liquid. (I have not made it since last year. )

Thanks! Im going to try this one next time!

Some of the herbs seemed a bit unusual to me as well as the cheese. I guess the Irish cheddar was used to go with the beer but I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the combos. Of course I can't grasp french onion soup with beer, either. lol Wine and cognac, maybe some brandy.

I've used Ina Garten's recipe with good results ...

And here is Julia Childs' recipe

I will share my recipe for French Onion Soup, but it will have to wait until my next trip to Panera so I can ask them for it... :Ninja
