I mentioned the Shark, and he was fairly adamant that it wasn't as good as folks think.

What does he recommend?

I've heard great things about Oreck and Dyson. But, I have a Shark. It's okay and does the job, but I just don't feel like it has the power and suction that it needs. I wouldn't recommend it - especially if you have a lot of carpet in your house.

Oreck and Dyson are way overpriced... and we have mostly hardwood floors.

My best friend owns her own house cleaning business and she loves the Sharks.

;)

Our downstairs is all hardwoods and tile. Our stairs, hallway and two of the bedrooms are carpet. Maybe Shark makes a commercial model or something, but I really don't like ours and just don't feel like it does the job for "heavy" cleaning. For a quick vacuum, it's fine though. My brother and SIL have a Dyson and love it - their house is mostly carpet. Oreck is all the cleaning staff uses at the office and from the few times that I have borrowed them to use (usually when I have to clean up an explosion from my 3-hole punch), they work really well.
Orack, or Dyson are the best out there. The Shark is a no go for the reasons that Lisa states. I have a Dyson, and I love it. I bought it at big lots a couple of years ago. It cost 150.00, I think.
We had an Orack (sp) at one of the animal hospitals I worked at, and it did great. I really liked using it. Well as much as one can like to vacuum. :))

I'm sure that Oreck and Dyson are great, but our Santa has a budget.

Girl, my hubby will likely not get shopping for me done until the weekend before Christmas or sometime Christmas week - we plan for the princess, but he always does his shopping at the last minute.

I want a portable scanner to scan old pictures. And, I've got my eye on a new vacuum cleaner (my Kirby is older than Lisa' microwave (and weighs more)). I also have my eye on a new TV stand. :))

And, if money were no object, we'd all have new computers. But, I may get underwear. :))

http://www.hsn.com/products/vupoint-magic-wand-4-portable-scanner-with-dock-bundle/7327690

This scanner is really nice. You can use it in the dock or take it with you as a handheld. I bought it a few years ago when it was just a handheld and my gf just bought it with the dock. Son used in it high school in one of his classes that books were short. He would scan pages he needed to study. I have used it for pictures in albums and on walls and have had no issues and I think the price is fair.

What vacuum do you have your eye on? We were thinking of a new one as our family gift.

That scanner looks cool. I had looked at it before, but that was before the dock.

Well, I had my eye on the Shark. :)) I have a Kirby. For the price to refurbish the Kirby, I could buy a Shark. We have minimal carpet, but I use my vacuum to go over the hardwoods and tile too. I like the idea that the Shark is much more lightweight for that job and for the stairs.

At the rate we're going, the princess, and the princes might just get gift cards. The grand princess, and grand prince may also be in the same bucket. SIL, and possible DIL may just get gift cards too.

Might want to check some reviews on floors other than carpet with the Shark. I have a Shark and am not at all pleased with how it performs on any surface, other than carpet. Actually, I'm barely pleased with how it performs on carpet. However, with hardwood, vinyl, & tile, floors, it blows what your trying to vacuum away from the vacuum, instead of picking it up (unless you back up over it). It's been the hugest disappointment I've ever had in a vacuum & I regularly maintain/clean my vacuums. I wash/air dry all the filters, wash the canister, blow out the hoses and clean the "broom" spinny thingy. I liked my 20.00 Walmart vacuum I had in 1992 better.

I appreciate everyone using the shark, especially on hardwood. That means you all will be calling me soon. The shark is great for those who own flooring businesses.

Nope - I don't vacuum the hardwoods. I give the princess the dust mop and tell her to get to work.

Right? The wheels do not turn very fluidly and I bet it'll scratch up a wood floor in a heart beat!!!

I want a newer Jeep. Mine's a 1996 and I want at least a 2000 or 2001. (See, I'm not even asking for a new-new one). I know I can't get the Jeep, so whatever I get will be fine.

Yeah, a newer Blazer would be nice.

I actually thought you all were talking about the shark streram mop for wood. That thing will destroy wood.

My SIL has one, and I wondered about that when I saw her using it. Our rental has hardwoods in two rooms - what do you recommend? I figgered a damp mop (the squeegie kind) with warm water only or water and vinegar completely wrung out.

I haven't heard anything about this one, but I've heard really good things about the Fujitsu SnapScan. Def. more expensive than the Vupoint, but prolly better quality as well. I want one.

I have never heard of the SnapScan. I will look into it for paper since the Neat does not seem to be the solution I want. (It is priced comparable to the Neat so definitely in the running)

The VuPoint is excellent for pictures. I have not had one that you could actually tell I did not take it. I even had one restored from a scan, Nick (used to have a shop in Downtown Dallas) thought it was the original.

Nicholas restored some pics for us...great guy. That is GREAT news about the VuPoint. I rather figured (since I haven't heard anything different) that two scanners would be needed - one for reg. documents and one for pics. I'll add that one to my list as well.

You know him too? Cool! He did a FABULOUS job of restoring the picture. I was so very happy.

I can do documents with the VuPoint, but it is a pain. (It was good for when son used it for a couple of pages for school and small things though) I wanted the Neat because you scan IT organizes (which once totally digital would not be an issue, but to get to that point, ugh) but my gf is not liking it and Sadie says it was a pain too. The one you posted has great reviews on Amazon so I am going to look at that more. I have to get rid of all this paper!!!

Mei lan, I started using a new product called Rejuvinate. It's sold at Home Depot, comes in a spray bottle and you use it with a cover that slips over your regular mop. I love it.

What I was using before left a terrible, waxy looking build up on the floor. It would smudge and always looked dirty. Actually, BS came and fixed my floor (twice!) because we are idiots when it comes to that and I was rather embarrassed to have a flooring professional see it at that time.

It looks MUCH, MUCH better!
