Troy Davis to be executed after parole board denies clemency

A Georgia parole board has denied clemency to Troy Davis, the death-row inmate whose case attracted international attention amid what supporters say are significant doubts over his guilt. With the failure of Davis' last-ditch appeal, announced Tuesday morning, he appears all but certain to be executed by lethal injection Wednesday at 7 p.m.

"He's guilty," Joan MacPhail-Harris, the widow of the Savannah cop who Davis was convicted of killing, told reporters Monday before the board announced its decision. "We need to go ahead and execute him." ...

Although all the news I've been seeing about this has talked about the convict, I hope all don't forget the officer victim and his fatherless children and widow.

Because of how this has dragged on it has remained, I'm sure, a very open wound for the MacPhail's family. While finally putting Davis to death will obviously not bring him back it will hopefully give his family a chance to heal.

A number of statements have been released decrying the parole board's decision; most notable among them is one from state senator Vincent Fort, who called on the staff at the prison where the execution is scheduled to go on a general strike.

"Each and every one of you are human beings with the power to refuse and resist participation in an immoral execution of a man who may be innocent," Fort said. "I implore you to use this power."

Really? :huh

The biggest shame to all this is that it took 22 years to get to this final stage. Lets get it over quickly before the bleeding heart liberals cause race riots in the street of Atlanta.

I suppose he is against abortion as well? :Ninja

The news media is fueling this for a race riot. When they announced that some had changed their statements they fail to mention all the other evidence against Davis. They also don't mention that this change in the witnesses didn't occur until all of Davis other options had vanished. And he's been given more opportunities than anyone else. If they HAD granted clemency that would have been the injustice. May God have mercy. RIP Officer McPhail.

There were a few protesting in Marietta Square as I left work last night. One woman I saw looked to be about 30 years old, holding a candle and a sign that read "Not in my name". That would have made her about 8 years old when the crime was committed. In other words, most everyone who protested knows NOTHING about the case and was certainly not at the trial. All they know is the media hype and an entire life listening to liberal nonsense.

And people shake their heads in wonder about why this nation is SO screwed up :Ninja

It's amazing how many people think there was no physical evidence and how many people believe that those "7 of 9" eye witnesses all now say he was innocent. I can understand that some people are against the death penalty no matter what. That's fine but be honest about it. Don't take a murderer (he didn't just kill MacPhail) and pretend he's a choir boy being killed by an evil state for no reason.

And now, in the interest of total clarity and such, I am getting conflicting information about whether or not the other victim died. He absolutely was shot in the face, exactly as MacPhail was. Since I am not finding a record of another murder conviction yet there has no question that Davis was convicted in that other shooting I have to assume that the other victim did not die. Still ... same gun, same placement of the shot. Sure, MacPhail took one to the chest too but the face shot ... that was the same as the other conviction and the same gun that tied Davis to the MacPhail shooting.

The other victim did die. Davis was convicted of murder in the other case. I don't recall the name of the other victim though.

...In a 2008 statement, then-Chatham County District Attorney Spencer Lawton described how Davis was at a pool party in Savannah when he shot another man, Michael Cooper, wounding him in the face. Davis was then driven to a nearby convenience store, where he pistol-whipped a homeless man, Larry Young, who'd just bought a beer.

Soon thereafter, prosecutors said, MacPhail - who was working in uniform, off-duty, at a nearby bus station and restaurant - arrived. It was then, the jury determined, that Davis shot the officer three times, including once in the face as he stood over him...

Now I'm confused. All reports I've heard indicate that Davis had already been convicted of murder in the other case. Maybe he was convicted of "shooting" in the other case. Now I'll have to do some more research.

Davis was convicted of aggravated assault in the shooting of Michael Cooper. The funny thing is that there are still TWO eyewitnesses who testified that they saw Davis shoot MacPhail - they did not recant their stories.

ETA: I can't find the article I read that said that the 7 didn't testify, let me find that again.
