COLUMBIA, S.C. – State lawmakers are discussing the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the Statehouse grounds, as national figures, including President Barack Obama, argue that it should be taken down.

:dunno I just do not know. What do you think?

It should come down. The war is over. The South lost - it's time to let it go.

Though I have no great love for that flag; I don't agree with the reasoning behind removing it.

The flag is part of our history. It is only racist if we take it that way. People are too dang sensitive and keeping this stuff stirred up only makes it worse.

Here's a question: If the majority of non-white citizens find it racially offensive, but the while folks don't, is it a form of racism or not?

Another question: Does a majority of non-whites find it offensive; or just a handful of activists?

In my question, it's the majority.

But do you know that this is the case?

Some years ago when Georgia took the confederate flag out of their state flag; I saw some poles that indicated most black people really didn't give a rip one way or the other. The whole stink was caused by a small group who was not even from Georgia.

Being from up North I have never really had an opinion on that flag. I completely see why some want it to go, and yet I do understand that it is part of history.

Here is an excerpt from an article (link below):

The politics of the flag are complicated in South Carolina. A November poll from Winthrop University found that 73% of whites in the state want the flag to remain where it is. The same poll reported that 61% of blacks want it taken down.

So, that being said, if a majority of non-whites find the flag racially offensive, is it a form of racism?

Possibly, but it depends on why they think it is offensive. How much propaganda have they been fed by the race baiters? If you actually go back and study history; the flag in itself was not a racist symbol.

I dunno the answer, it's a tough situation. Thankfully it's for that state to figure out and not us.

To me, it's not a question of why (and maybe I've worked with too many discrimination cases). The flag, in its most recent history, was used as a racially divisive symbol and should be taken down from all government buildings.

They will probably take it down. Will it make a noticeable difference with race relations? No.

True. The racists hate groups will also.

My 2 cents worth.
(however, due to inflation, please note that I will be billing you for $10)

The flag in question was followed in battle by brave, honorable men and as such is a tribute to those who fought under her banner.

However, over the past hundred years, this flag has been appropriated by those who stand for evil, ugly and hateful things.
Thus this once honorable flag has come to symbolize, to the majority of people, both black and white, the horrible beliefs of those who have decided to use the flag for their pervereted beliefs.

Like the swastika used by Nazi Germany, the flag of our forefathers has been irrevocable stained by the hatred of those who fly it in support of their hatred.
Just as the swastika became a symbol of evil, our flag has become a symbol of intolerance and hatred.

As much as it pains me to say it, this flag needs to be retired to the museums where the flags that actually were flown for the purpose for which they were intended are displayed.

You know, it's not always about "race baiters." Sometimes, things ARE racially offensive.

Of course. But sometimes people blow certain things all out of proportion too. In fact...some of them make a lot of money by doing so.

I guess we have a reverse democracy. Based on SC's demographics, about 2.5 million want the flag left alone, while about 875,000 want it taken down. Or about 3 to 1 in favor of the flag.

Very good points. Using that as a perspective I would lean towards taking it down.
P.S. The check is in the mail. :whistle
