South Carolina Shootingly

This is a pretty clear cut case, in my opinion. The Air Force base that the hubby was stationed at is located in North Charleston - it makes me sad that this happened in that community, but I'm proud of the way the City has responded. And, the family of the man shot has demonstrated a lot of class in my book - the news reports last night said that they have asked Al Sharpton NOT to get involved because they do not want this to turn into another Ferguson.

But, there will be a wrongful death lawsuit/settlement - you can bet the farm on that one...
No doubt about the lawsuits. I'm sure the city is already discussing a way to settle out of court.

So I need to ask Colson a question. You said if they are running away and can cause harm to others, shooting is justified. So if he got the taser and ran away with it, would that have been justification? Could he have used that to harm others? I think that's what the officer was originally saying. Of course, the video says otherwise.

Thank you, dearest. At least somebody loves me. You'd think the third highest poster would get some respect, but nooooooo.

I wonder if there would be less crime if you knew; commit a crime and get caught, risk going to prison: commit a crime and run to keep from getting caught, risk going to the graveyard.

Commit no crimes, no need to run.

Since crime in all major categories has been going down for years, I don't think a law like this is necessary.
Crime is not down.
Don't believe everything you hear.
If you think crime is down, go to a major city and leave you car unlocked and the keys in it.
Let me know how that goes.
You could do that in the 60s.

Or leave your bicycle laying out on the front lawn for a week.
Let me know how that goes.
You could do that in the 60s.

Or leave your 5 and 6 yr old kids in the car, with the windows down, at a shopping center while you go shopping.
You could do that in the 60s.

Or leave the keys in your car at night, year round.
You could do that in the 60s.

Or leave your doors to your house unlocked year round.
You could do that in the 60s.

When you start doing these things, and nothing happens, then I will believe that there is less crime today than when I was a kid.

Look at the numbers.

If this is a discussion of feelings and perception, then we may as well end this discussion right now.

Screw the numbers.
Did you leave the keys in your car in a major city?
Until you put you possessions and your life where your "numbers" are, then there is nothing to discuss.
You make my point for me.

I sorta am.
But I get ticked when I hear, "who you gonna believe, numbers that can be manipulated or what you see and know".
Sorta like that old saying, "who you gonna believe me or your lying eyes".

I get it, but I never lived in a place that you didn't lock your car or doors. :dunno I know that there were issues back when I was little in NY. Have we all not discussed how we hear and see everything now? It does seem like every minute things are happening, but I do not think that it was Utopia years ago either. In the 80's my sister had a friend that lived in a small rural town in Florida, one day her friend went home to find mom dead and the couple of days old baby gone. This was a community that everyone did leave their doors unlocked and people knew each other. (My parents were very thankful my sister did not go home with her that day. :( ) I think evil and crime has always been here and you were lucky if you grew up in an area that did not have it.

Like I said, having a discussion on this issue when we have entirely different standards for evidence is a waste of time.

I guess that means you will lock your doors.
We you even alive in the 60s?

By the way, the city and department appear to be stepping up. But to the point, they may or may not have until the video showed up. Now granted, they had not completed their "investigation" yet and just maybe the fact that the guy was shot what, eight times in the back some 25 feet away from the cop might have tickled their curiosity, but we don't know. It looks like the cop dropped his Taser by the body to cover his arse. What every department should take away from this is what the Mayor and Chief on North Charleston did. Body cams for everyone. The cops always use the line that if you aren't guilty you have nothing to worry about. Well the shoe is on the other foot now. Nobody who is acting reasonably during an encounter has anything to fear from a video of the incident, not the citizens or the police.

From the information I've read the guy was behind on child support and had a warrant out for his "arrest" for non-violent actions. Unless there is evidence of him assaulting or even threatening to assault the officer then there is little justification for shooting 8 times towards his back. I have no idea of how many times he was actually shot or even if he died from injuries as the result of being shot. For all I know he could have died from a heart attack. Based on what little I do know and assuming there is no contradictory evidence not yet revealed there is no way anyone can convince me that firing 8 shots while he was running away is a justified action. There was a time when shooting someone in the back was considered cowardly, I guess those days are also gone. Take the same evidence and apply it towards one of your friends or loved ones and it's easy to come to the conclusion that there had to have been an alternate way to end the incident. I hate it for both families, there will be no good outcome for either.

I was reading a report the other day that said even though overall crime is down in the country, crime has risen in most poverty stricken neighborhoods in urban areas.
