are what's cooking, actually cooked them last night. One chocolate and one coconut, both from my grandmother's recipe. I've never cooked pies before but attempted Sunday night, they were both awful and were immediately tossed in the trash. Last night I attempted round 2, both were absolutely perfect (well, close enough), including the meringue.

YUM! Now that you have it mastered, you should invite us all over for coffee and pie!!

I am not a big pie eater, but apparently I can make them. Good for you for trying again! I am glad you enjoyed them. Do you have a torch for your meringue? If not, go get one, the most fun of making them! :))

Actually the most fun part was separating the egg yokes from the egg whites. I used the "water bottle method' and it worked like a charm, I could have stood there and separated every egg we had in the house. If you haven't tried it I would recommend it even if you don't need to use the egg, it's that fun. Crack the egg into a bowl being careful not to bust the yoke, take an empty water bottle and squeeze it in some, then place the bottle over the egg yoke and slowly let the bottle open back up. The suction created from the bottle opening back out sucks the egg yoke right into the bottle. Less than 5 seconds per egg. BAM!!!

The most important question is did you make your own pie crust. :D

And, no, I don't. I am too scared to try. :dunno

My grandmother used to make meringue using a saucer and a fork. She would whip it for what seemed like forever.

I make meringue in my Kitchenaid. Works like a charm. I still think of my sweet grandmother while I do it. if she was still around (and making me banana pudding) I'd buy her a kitchenaid. :love (And I don't even like meringue)

I can make excellent pies. The key to a successful crust is using ice water. The key to a successful meringue is not one drop of yolk in the whites. I brown the meringue in the oven, not having a fancy torch. ;)

Get the torch, it is cheap and fun!

J-Man....I have an egg separator, most of my cakes require 12 whites, no way I wouldn't make an error so I had bought one a few years back. :))

An egg separator? I must google this...

Don't buy one, just use an empty water bottle. Trust me, it works like a charm and is fun.

Had I remembered I had follow up lab work scheduled for this morning I would have waited another week before baking them. I'm sure my sugar levels will not be elevated because of them. Duhhh.
