I was thinking on that subject earlier tonight, about how this has a realistic chance of getting out of hand after seeing more and more reports of people infected and some attempting to travel. I read where some of the missions are withdrawing most non-essential personnel from certain areas. We should all pray for those patients, health care people, and others offering assistance. Hopefully it can be contained and controlled with minimal spreading. :pray

This is a post I made elsewhere verbatim, and I would like your thoughts as well:

OK, a lot of peeps here I really like are among those freaking out over this. Ambulances transport people with communicable diseases all the time. Ebola ia not easily transmittable - YOU CAN ONLY CATCH IT THROUGH THE EXCHANGE OF BODILY FLUIDS OR EATING THE IMPROPERLY-COOKED MEAT OF AN INFECTED ANIMAL.

Now, considering that we do not drink the blood of our dead, nor eat bat soup, as is the habit in those places where ebola is rampant, nor do we not wash our hands after handling our dead for burial, etc., please give me your version as to how this is going to be a massive epidemic here. Because I'm not seein' it. So I would like to hear your thoughts as to how it would not only transmit from the patients coming in from Africa to Emory, but then to others and become a pandemic.

Before responding, please consider the following article about ebola: http://www.vox.com/2014/7/31/5952515/facts-you-should-know-about-the-ebola-outbreak

People are afraid of the unknown. Remember how folks reacted to the first HIV patients? In all honesty, in some ways, it does make me a little uncomfortable that an Ebola patient is going to be so close to us because it's a general worry about the unknown, and I think that is to be expected. But, I also know that the reality is that it won't really affect us and that it definitely should NOT keep us from helping someone infected with the virus get treatment.

While I agree it may be difficult to spread, especially in the U.S. where our sanitation standards are somewhat higher than in other parts of the world, the fact that there is no cure and it is almost always life threatening is of concern. Add to that the fact that one person could unknowingly be infected, travel to a congested region, and unintentionally spread the disease where it could continue the pattern probably alarms many people. Then, in the current world we live it, consider that one could KNOWINGLY do the same and that just raises the level of concern. And it's not just Ebola, there are many other communicable diseases which can spread easily if not quickly contained. I'm not a germ freak and normally feel a good immune system is the best defense against most illnesses, but this topic does raise the hairs on the back of my neck. It's also one reason I could never work in the health care industry and why I thank those who do every time I see them.

Keep in mind that the two coming to the US were American DOCTORS or healthcare workers who were wearing hazmat suites or helping with decontamination procedures. They were suppose to have been safe from catching the virus.

Now with that in mind..... I'm a lot more concerned with people crossing our southern border that are from that part of world (evidence found of such) that we do not know their whereabouts then these two coming here.

So let's take some votes (answer each one separately and without regard to the others):

1. Who feels there's a zero chance of anyone contracting the Ebola virus (should be a low count because there are documented cases).

2. Who feels there's only a small chance, and mainly limited to those who live in "poor" parts of the world?

3. Who feels there's a moderate chance for it to spread evenly throughout population centers?

4. Who feels there's a high chance of it becoming a dangerous pandemic?

I'll go first:
1. N
2. Y
3. N
4. N

That'll be, "Present and accounted for....SIR!!!" (Well, until you're not, because of some random Ebola virus)

I agree with your answers, but re: #2 - poor has little to do with it (see: Dominican Republic and many other poor countries...even Mexico). Behavior is what drives much of this (poor sanitation habits, eating infected meat without cooking it, etc.).

Agree, I should have been more specific. Poor meaning those countries / communities who do not have access to sanitary facilities and/or who choose to ignore sanitary practices.

I always heard Ebola was not an airborne virus, yet there are people yelling and screaming all over the internet that this has to be a different strain and airborne because of the number of cases and the fact that people that took precautions have contracted it. Someone tell me they are all wrong. (I will believe you because most on the internet are crazy.)

They are all wrong. This is an old strain that is well-recognized. It is ONLY transmitted by exchange of bodily fluids or eating improperly-cooked infected meat.

I'm still seeing massive hysteria over it. Whatever. I am choosing not to obsess over this.

I am too. I asked one person on FB where she was getting her info from because I never heard airborne, it was some wacko site and she was not happy I asked. :/ Oh well, nothing I can do for those that choose to believe this is coming to Atlanta and going to kill us all. :huh

I'm definitely not obsessing or overly concerned about Ebola at this point but I have no desire to be near it or anyone whom may have had contact with it. No reason to take any unnecessary risks. I'm sure those in the medical field will observe proper safety procedures while treating the patients. Hopefully they will be successfully treated and make a full recovery.

I'm not terribly worried about Ebola, but I am reminded of the scientific arrogance of Jurassic Park:

"Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should."

"the kind of control you're attempting simply is... it's not possible. If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that life will not be contained.
Life breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, uh... well, there it is. Life, uh... finds a way."
