I'm still thinking it refers to the physical body resting in peace until it reunites with the soul on judgement day.

So you think your body is sleeping and when judgement day comes it will rise up to heaven?

Catholics believe you (body) will be reunited with your soul on judgment day. No one is sleeping. :)

Even if your body is ashes.....it will come back together and reunite with your soul?

Catholics do not really cremate so someone with more knowledge than me would need to answer. Sorry.

Sounds good to me.

LOL.......I was sorta hoping that I would have a new body with wings and stuff...and could float....

He works miracles right? I believe your old decomposed body gets miracled on the way up into a new body. There.

I guess what really got me thinking this is.......I heard so many stories on TV that people have died and went to Heaven and they saw some of the people they knew and God allowed them to come back to life here on earth........and the people they saw they knew who they were but never mentioned if they looked younger or older and I always say RIP when someone dies...but really they're not resting (sleeping) like I thought they were....anyways ...it has been on my mind and just wanted other people thoughts.....I guess it okay to say RIP

I haven't tried to search for the origin of the phrase, but I always thought they were words for someone who had been suffering from a painful illness. I could be very wrong, but at death the words can be difficult. It seems a respectable statement for someone who has suffered as so many do.
