Where in the world do people get RIP (Rest in Peace) from?

There is nothing in the Bible that tells us that anyone will be resting when they die... Only their body is resting because they've exited it. They are either present with the Lord and continuing a journey with Jesus, OR they are eternally damned (no resorts, spas, or vacation spots in between) and Hell is not restful.

What's your input on this?

I believe they are speaking more about the physical body and not the soul. From what I understand its more of a Catholic thing.

One of the books of the Bible. I can not remember which. It is a wish of peace in the afterlife and your body is resting and will be reunited with your soul on judgement day.

Is it Isaiah? I'm far from an expert but I'm trying here.

Found this

RIPabbr. Latin requiescat in pace (may he rest in peace; may she rest in peace)

:)) I am not sure. My bible is downstairs....someone grab theirs and look it up!

BTW..it is great you are trying Hank. I am not the best with verse. I remember all the lessons and meanings, but have the hardest time remembering exactly where in the Bible it is.

Here are my thoughts.......There is only one way for you to see heaven. Jesus Christ is the ONE & ONLY access to Heaven (John 6:44, Acts 4:12, 16:30-31). There is no other way possible to get to there except by the Son of God. Getting to heaven is a one-way trip. If you die before Jesus Christ’s Second coming you will go directly to heaven and be in the presence of God......... If you never see heaven, you will most certainly see hell and that is also a one-way trip from which there is no return.

Revelation 21:7-8 shows the fate of those not going to heaven: “Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

How are you relating that to RIP? I do not believe that anyone thinks that you can get to Heaven without Jesus.

I've never really thought of it as a religious thing. I just figured it meant that the deceased was now freed from whatever hurt him, made him sick, etc.

However...the term does seem to imply the existence of an eternal soul. So maybe it is religious.

Not real sure what I was thinking when I say...RIP....I guess it's something that I always said without even thinking what I was saying......Rest to me means sleeping....For some reason I got to thinking about it and started to study it...

I believe your first thought is how most use it.

I think most use it as GD stated. Never hurts to ask what others thoughts are!

That was one of my thoughts as well....

I'm still thinking it refers to the physical body resting in peace until it reunites with the soul on judgement day.

So you think your body is sleeping and when judgement day comes it will rise up to heaven?

Catholics believe you (body) will be reunited with your soul on judgment day. No one is sleeping. :)

That's just something I've heard and read. I'm not an expert.

Even if your body is ashes.....it will come back together and reunite with your soul?
