How do you feel about guns in churches?

I'm not opposed to mandatory firearms training; but we still have the same problem as we would with gun control...the bad guys won't abide by it.

My only concern is controlling what we can. By that I mean, there are some who could very easily obtain a CCW permit who are a little "frightening". I think some in depth training to be allowed to carry anywhere would be beneficial to the entire public. In my mind, something very similar to what LEOs have.

Obviously the perps aren't going to have that, but if those of us who carry are well-trained, it can only be a good thing. :thumbsup

Or, let me explain it this way: Would any of you want ME to carry a gun if I had not had training? (Think about that one...)

I didn't start this topic as a good guys v. bad guys discussion. I'm interested in how people feel about gun owners who violate the concealed/carry laws in this state. I'm seeing that most conservatives find this okay. I don't.

Do we have proof that gun owners are violating the conceal carry laws? Any arrests? Why are you making that part an issue? Apparently, that hasn't been an issue at all.

The pastors who are pitching a fit about this are annoying me. It's simple. Have your church vote to NOT allow guns. Problem solved. And, you aren't going to fix anything by having a buyback program for toy guns and water pistols.

I don't know you well enough in real life to even begin to make that judgment.

Yes - there were several callers into the show on WSB who admitted that they carried in churches and didn't care what the law was. That's where I got the idea to start this topic - hearing that admission bothered me.

And, there are also pastors who are pitching a fit because they WANT to allow parishioners to be able to carry in church. A pastor of a church in Barnesville, GA comes to mind immediately. I will try to find a link...

For arguments sake, let's say No and let's say that GD has posted several things about farting and thongs...

So they were a few strays who admitted to carrying illegally. Not thrilled about it. But there are also folks who admit to illegal drug use and voting numerous times for Obama. :dunno

The pastors I was referring to are on TV proclaiming their DISLIKE for guns in churches. I do understand the theory that church is a sanctuary, but a child's school should be as well.

I tend to think most Baptist preachers might dislike the idea - try letting our service run over by a few minutes and you will see some unhappy folks...

Pertaining to some ideas that people who want a conceal permit should have to take classes, lets make sure we don't use the argument that compares a drivers license test with gun ownership. One is a constitutional right and the other is a state privilege.

True. But I'm not saying they need training to OWN the gun, but to CARRY/CONCEAL it. ;)
don't know how to run a belt loop through a holster? Need training on how to hide it? Ok. >:D

There is information on all that. Given to you at time of permit.

I think this is a great (and much needed) topic. I obtained my first CCP within the last year and I admit I was not clear on where I could and couldn't legally carry. I was surprised that when I asked friends and family (many who were long time CCP holders) I got conflicting answers. This told me it was a common issue. Now, when I carry, I just make sure I know where I'm going and what my schedule is before taking any weapon with me. If I'm uncertain then I double check before leaving my home. My wife and I stopped at a store recently, I was carrying. I missed the sign on the door which stated "No Weapons Allowed." Luckily my wife saw it and made me take it back to the car. I think many people probably assume they're allowed to carry at church as well as other places when in reality they really don't know for sure and don't take time to clarify. As for those who knowingly violate the "rule", they better hope they don't get "caught" and charges be brought against them (even if it's just a warning). I'm sure any recorded violation will be considered when they go to renew their permit.

georgiacarry.org is a great website to refer to any time you have questions about where it is or isn't okay to carry.
