How do you feel about guns in churches?

LisaC

I'm here to spin the moral compass.
Okay, I caught the tail end of this discussion on WSB while I was sitting in traffic last night. (I'm putting this in the political forum because this is about the law, not personal religious preferences).

How do you feel about people having guns in your church with the law as it stands right now? Currently, it is illegal for them to be in places of worship although the law has been modified to say that it is okay for guns to be left in the car on church property, but there are pastors and church leaders out there that want this law to change. There are also people out there that feel like that are exempt from this law and they do it anyway.

What say you?

I think law abiding citizens should be able to carry anywhere. Of course, at our church, we have deputies on site, so I guess for me, this is a moot point.

As far as regulation goes, I would be okay with everyone who is issued a carry/conceal permit to attend a training class, and then be allowed to carry anywhere in public.

I think a house of worship should be a safe haven, however the bad guys know that all too well. My personal opinion would be the congregation (as Westridge does) should provide their own security and make their own decisions. There should be no laws telling the church what it can and cannot do. Each and every house of worship is different.

I do not attend church.

I am in favor of this law... the right to carry in church, on campus, in bars.

:CLAP

What bothers me are the people that disregard the law because they think they are above it, especially when Georgia does not require that you attend a training class to get your concealed permit, you simply have to pass a background check.

Something I've tried to get someone at the state level to support is a change to the CCW law to allow ex-LEO's and military personnel with honorable discharge to have unlimited carry, except for courthouses and such.

So yes, I support this law to allow a church to determine for themselves if they want to allow this. But frankly, when done properly, no one will ever know you are carring concealed anyway. I've confirmed that fact many times.

As far as mandatory classes, not sure about that.

But I am highly opposed to carring in bars or other places IF that person is drinking. This is a disaster looking for a place to happen.

I agree. I think the last place you want a gun is in a bar with folks of altered states of mind.

It should be up to the individual church.

But as with all gun laws; the only people who obey them are the law-abiding citizens. A crazy who wants to shoot up the inside of a church is gonna walk right in with one, legal or not.

The government should not be deciding where a legal item can be carried. The property owners (church, business, etc.) have the power and should have the right to make that decision for themselves.

I am exempt, but won't carry if the pastor does not wish it...out of respect. I'm kinda new to my church and would not presume I can do whatever I want, just because I can.

I was drafted on the security team the second week of my membership and will most certainly carry if the pastor decides that's what he wants to do. Years ago, you would never have thought a church would need a security team, but things have gotten to the point where crazy people are everywhere with a death wish and seeking attention by either shooting up school kids or anyone at a gathering they feel will make the news.

While working evenings in plain clothes in the 90's, I used my lunch hour to attend Wednesday night service. I carried then, but no one ever knew it. In most churches today, you are over-dressed if you wear a suit jacket, so they may have a tougher time concealing, but since I've always felt it proper to dress my best for church, it's easy for me. 8)

Church staff members are often there alone during the day or sometimes in the evenings. There are some weird folks come by churches at all hours; some needing help but some running scams or who knows what. At the church I used to be at, we had some scary ones come in at times. It would be good if the staff members could carry if they wanted to.

The one thing that bothers me is that there are people who openly violate this law - whether they have a concealed permit or not. Now, for the most part, the concealed permit holders I know are responsible gun owners, but there are a few that are just a little too trigger happy and could seriously injure someone if they were to panic. THOSE are the people that worry me, especially when they are among those that violate the law.

And, I personally think training should be required before you can get your concealed permit - there are some lucky folks out there that can pass a background check, but really need training in how to properly handle a gun. And, before anyone gets their panties twisted, there was a time when I would have fallen into this category, but I took the time to get the training.

On a similar note, I see people every day that could stand going through Driver's Ed again. :Stick

Yes, but they at least have to pass a driving test.

I wholeheartedly agree. It's amazing to me that we have the tests/requirements for a driver's license, but it only takes a background check for a CCW permit. :dunno

I am getting training from an expert, too, but I know many don't.
