Hey You Mechanic Types - Question

My Mustang was parked last Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday as I didn't go anywhere. Sunday and Monday, it rained like crazy. Wednesday, I noticed a lot of water on the passenger floor and it didn't smell like anti-freeze. I got out the shop-vac and vacuumed it out. Today, my carpet is soaked again.

I suspect it may be the heater core, but it's a big problem to replace because the entire dash has to come out to get to it. I've been reading products like Bars Leak and others will stop a leak, but will also cause problems for the radiator later on. I also read black pepper will seal the leak.

Any suggestions?

If it was the heater core, the water in the floor would be anti-freeze solution.

Check the A/C condensate drain, it's probably clogged. It is usually near the passenger's feet and has a tube that drains through the floor or firewall.

I'll go check it. There was a lot of water and there was also a lot of it on the back passenger floor. It's almost like someone poured a gallon of water or more in my car. I checked the carpet up on the firewall and it's nice and dry.

Check you radiator to see if you are low on water. Since you have not driven it, I doubt it was the heater core. They only leak when the engine gets hot and there is pressure in the system.

I suspect that the windshield or back window is leaking. The seals can go bad and leak during heavy or prolonged rain. If there is a sunroof, it might be leaking also.

GD is correct, you will smell the antifreeze. It also feels very oily if you touch the carpet.

The windows aren't leaking.

There is only 3 ways water can get into your vehicle, leaking heater core, leaky glass seal, and an open window. Unless someone intentionally pours water into your car.

It's ruined, you can't fix it. Just sell it to me for a couple hundred and you won't have to worry about it anymore. ;D

My 94 Vette had the heater core start leaking. I swear they start with the heater core and build the vehicle around it. It was funny reading the repair manual as to how to replace it and they kept repeating before you attempt to do this........

DISABLE THE AIRBAGS!!!! DISABLE THE AIRBAGS!!!

I can't find the dang condensate drain line. I'm looking all over the internet and can't find any information on where it's located.

It's usually a black plastic pan of sorts that is near the blower. There should be a rubber tube coming off the bottom. Sometimes it has a "flapper" valve that gives it a check valve function.

I was able to find the blower, but nothing else like you described. This is really ticking me off. The car doesn't sit high enough off the ground to crawl under it to take a look either.

I have some ramps at the house if you wanna swing by tomorrow

Gary - Looking on the internet, there's mention of the drain being in the transmission hump. That's different!

Sure is. You might wanna find a Mustang Forum to ask in

I found a Mustang forum and someone had asked the same question in 2009. Guess what? He never received an answer. :laugh
