Georgia Church Kicks Out 92 Year Old Woman

A church in Bainbridge, GA has tossed out a 92-year-old woman for not tithing or attending regularly during an illness that lasted several months.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought part of what churches did was help out and support people like this? I don't recall the story in the Bible where Jesus told the poor and sick people to go away so he could hang out with his more well-to-do buddies or the one where he used his carpentry skills to help the moneychangers in the temples to build better tables.

In any case, the Christian label on this church does not mean it is truly Christ-like. And, I wonder if the pastor who sent her this letter ever bothered to visit her in her home while she was sick for so long?

There are churches that think they are resorts for the spiritually well and not hospitals for the spiritually sick.

You would have to be familiar with Bainbridge to understand the back story. One of the most bass-ackwards towns in south Georgia. Doesn't surprise me at all. Just goes to show you how a church can change over time. Obviously she was happy there since she had been a member for over 50 years.

The Lord said, Ask and you shall be saved and spend eternity in Heaven!
And all at the low low price of 10% a month.
Shipping and handling not included.

On the flip side, the Debil will take anyone. You don't have to do a thing.....and it's completely free.

I was not aware that someone could be tossed out of a church for non payment...

Apparently so. Isn't this the second story in about a month that we heard of this? :huh

I was voted out of church because......not really sure why.

I just printed off a photo of the woman in the story. I'll be using this story as a lead in to my sermon tomorrow. I'll be talking about the role of the church. Acts 2:42 summarizes my sermon. But, I plan to use good teaching, and a story is part of good teaching.

42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

In all seriousness, this may be the widest collection of verses from all over the Bible that I have ever used. Rather than a single passage, I'm taking up a lot of verses about the role of the church. One of the things I don't like about the Bible is the way it is structured. (Am I allowed to say that?)

I talked about this church during the sermon today.

Afterward, a sweet 80+ year old woman told me that this happened to her. She was deeply involved with her church in Rapid City. Her brother-in-law became very ill, so she and her husband came up to North Dakota to take care of his ranch. He was SICK, so it was several years. As it turned out, he never did leave the hospital, and they now ranch.

But, she got a letter about a year into this that was totally in the 3rd person telling her that she had been removed as a member and was no longer welcome in the church. So she called the pastor and he told her the church didn't have time for people who didn't support it. Never mind the reason she wasn't going (she was up here helping her husband run the ranch).

On a good note: she and her husband now run the ranch and attend our church. We're keeping them!

Wow ... just wow.
Sounds like she and her husband are in a better place.
And. appears you did well with the sermon.

Unfortunately there are many buildings with a "Church" sign hanging out front but are no more a church than any other business.

I wanted to hit "like", but I don't like that this is true. So, I'll just comment to say that I agree with you. On of the things I noted in my sermon was that if I were Satan, the best place to do my work would be within the church.

But they'll all pass the plate around and cash your check.
