:rant Don't compare my 23 year marriage to Kim Kardashian's 72 hour marriage because you want to claim that Sally Ride's partner didn't get survivor benefits (btw, there were NO federal benefits to claim).

:huh That is nuts. Please tell me that was not a friend of yours that did that.

Several friends posted a picture that is making the rounds on Facebook. It's "in general", it's not specifically comparing MY marriage, but uses those to points to make a case AGAINST the "sanctity of marriage".

Ah!
Well I am glad it was not specifically at you! Goodness.

I'm asking this because I don't know, and none of the sites blasting the DOMA over this will say. EXACTLY what benefits are we talking about? She was a CIVILIAN astronaut, not a military service person, and she was no longer an astronaut at her death to boot. In fact, she resigned in 1987, she didn't "retire". So what are we talking here, her $255 Social Security death benefit?

I don't think THEY know. But, no, she wasn't entitled to any federal benefits (other than possibly the $255).

Just shakin my head...

It's nothing more than playing upon the emotions in the wake of her death, and pandering to those who may not know there were no federal benefits to disburse to ANYONE.

Sally's partner was at the same or higher salary level, so It's doubtful that she would have chosen Sally's SS over her own even if it was an option. This is just a bunch of activists speaking out of their butt without facts to back them up.

What is sad is that because she made it a personal choice not to "come out," there are groups now that are bashing her for her choice because they believe that she could have been a better role model to other lesbians. But, what they are overlooking is that she was a wonderful role model - there were no sexual connotations connected with her and she was a role model to ALL girls, without exception.
