As I understood the article, wish I could find it again, the story had been out there for several weeks/months and never got any "traction". All while Marco was in the race. His staff/supporters were the ones tweeting and re-tweeting all of it, and now deleting what they said trying to cover up their part in it.

Yeah, Anonymous doesn't have what you would call a solid chain of command, and sometimes things like this get said by a small group working within the larger hacker collective. Statements like this are not the regular MO. If they have proof, they usually publish it. That's the whole idea.
