Coconut Oil Review/Suggestions

So, I used coconut oil for fried chicken for dinner tonight. I'm impressed! It has the consistency much like Crisco. It does NOT have any coconut flavor, it's a very mild oil.

Has anyone else used this? What brands are good? I got Lou Ann brand, be aide it was the cheaper of the two brands Kroger has. It was on sale for $6.69! Yikes! I'd like a cheaper one if possible, too. LOL I only pay that for olive oil.

(I fried free range chicken, too. But I didn't like it. The drumsticks were very fatty.)

I use Nutiva (my vegan friend had recommended it) it is excellent. The have regular and extra virgin. It is not cheaper than LouAnn. I order it online.

I have been using Spectrum Organic ... but I bought it as part of a mega uber clearance deal. No clue what the cost is regularly.

Thanks, ladies! I didn't want to spend a lot on it and then not like it. I have heard of the Nutiva. What do you prefer, extra virgin? I prefer extra virgin when it comes to olive oil.

I'm going to google both of these!!

Extra virgin. I do usually get it from Amazon which is much cheaper at times then the website.

Interesting. I've thought about trying coconut oil too. I currently only use olive oil, but have heard coconut is much better.

They are both excellent for you. Coconut can be used differently. I use both at home.

Yes. I use a lot of EVOO, but it has a distinct flavor to me, so there are times were it wouldn't work. Example: my sweet and sour chicken. I don't fry often, but there's times I need oil.

Anyway,I have found that Lou Ana is not a good kind to get. It's (I think) refined with chemicals. Ill be getting a different kind, lol.

Looks like if you go with refined you get the least coconut taste.
Which is fine. I hate coconut. LOL I am just trying to go non-GMO as much as I can. It is a bit harder than I thought, since there are no labels telling consumers what contains GMO ingredients. So, I going with the most likely products to contain GMOs right now. Some things I just can't afford to buy in the organic version, though.

I was about to say organic will get you away from GMO but yep, it's pricey.

I happened to see what Spectrum goes for on Amazon. I'm so hosed when I run out. I'll have to find a new one. :(

Mine does not have GMO ingredients. I am going to check out UM's too. See if there is a price savings. :))

Edit: negative...they are all in about the same price range. High.

I'm thinking about making a run soon to Trader Joes. They have it, and it's either 4.99 or 5.99 a jar. I havent been in two months, so it's getting time to make a run again. Lol I had forgotten about it until I saw it on Amazon (but it's more on amazon than in the store). I didn't get it when I went because I was afraid it'd taste like coconuts.

I hear Hawaiian Tropic has a good coconut oil, but Banana Boat may be cheaper....

I'll have to see what the selection and pricing is at Kroger and at Nature's Corner.
Oooohhh... Where is Nature's Corner? There was one other brand at Kroger, and it was organic. I forgot the name, thought. It was $8 something, almost $9 a jar. That was the only other one I saw.

Nature's Corner Market is at the corner of Due West, Acworth Due West, Kennesaw Due West, and the other 15 Due Wests. lol
