Cabbage?

I would have guessed Germany. Thats odd. But, then again, my Dad likes sugar on his grits and he was born in N.C. They grow them weird up there I guess.

I think the vinegar helps cut the smell and gives it a salty taste. Sounds like who ever cooked it for him before used the vinegar wisely

I just cut mine up roughly, add some salt and pepper and some butter. Put it all in some water and boil it for about 15 minutes.

To reduce the smell of the cabbage while it cooks add a bit vinegar. However if you soaked the cabbage to rid it of pests use lemon juice instead.

It definitely needs a little vinegar - balsamic vinegar to be exact. I'll have to find my recipe, but it is wonderful!

I will try that next time! If there is a next time... ugh. Everytime I walked inside after taking Charlie out I wanted to pass out. LOL

That's why we wrap it in aluminum foil and either grill it or put it in the oven. :)
LOL I should have done that.

Mrs. B.,

When I have time, I will post my recipe for New England cabbage and rice. It is a big favorite, even with my picky eaters.

Please do! I'd love to try it. As long as it doesn't stink. :laugh

Here you go. The cabbage goes in toward the end, so it doesn't get the chance to smell. I always make this with kielbasa. It's a popular dinner around here. :)

New England Cabbage and Rice

4 slices bacon
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1 medium size chopped onion
2 cloves minced garlic
3 cups partially cooked rice (Either white or brown works fine. I use 1 cup rice in 1 cup water, and then it becomes 3 cups in the final dish.)
1 8-oz. can tomato sauce
1 cup chicken broth
4 cups thinly sliced cabbage
1/2 tsp. caraway seeds
1/4 tsp. hot red pepper flakes (optional)
salt to taste
1/4 cup grated Swiss cheese

In a Dutch oven, cook bacon until crisp. Remove bacon, cut up in pieces, and set aside. In bacon grease, saute green peppers and chopped onion until tender. Return bacon to Dutch oven. Stir in remaining ingredients, except Swiss cheese. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Pour mixture into a large serving dish. Sprinkle cheese on top. Yield: 4-6 servings.

Oh, yum Gen!!! That looks delish! The best part is that I have all that stuff except the cabbage and sausage. I'm going to try this when it gets a bit cooler.
