Anderson Cooper

I thought this was a non-story too - I figure if I know you're gay, then the rest of the country figured it out long before I did....

I really don't care whether he's gay or straight, it makes no difference in what I think of a person.

What I don't get is why so many professional people think they need to tell everyone about their sexuality, regardless of which side of the plate they bat from. The gays seem to be worse about this though.

Think about it...the equivalent of this would be Wolf Blitzer giving an interview and saying "Hey everyone, I'm straight". Ummm, OK. Whatever.

Just do your job people, I don't care who you bump uglies with.

People come out and make announcements because people talk about it so much. For years speculation has gone on regarding him, so that is why he made the announcement. Same as anyone else that has to make the statement. They should not have to, but because of the innuendo, stories, speculation, rumors, and people saying to tell them, they do.
If there was all of that about Wolf he would come out and say he was straight. Just how it is.

On a side note: Why do you refer to gay people as "the gays"?

I dunno. No disrespect intended, just a way to reference homosexuals in general.

Thanks. I was just asking. I knew you weren't knocking gay people, just thought it was an odd way to address gay people. :dunno Though, again, I could be wrong, it happens. :))

He came out, FINALLY, because there are still people in this country that need a real life example to combat the hatred they have been taught. It's that simple. I don't expect straight people to understand. Just know that it's important to the person that's making the statement. A show of support for something of personal importance to a fellow human being is always the righteous thing to do.

I thought he was gay years ago. I didn't like him for being a liberal, couldn't care less what he likes to do in the bedroom. Or on the kitchen counter. Or dining room table. Or back porch. Or sofa.

I do like him and I am interested in what he likes to do on his knees. stirthepot2

Well, I suppose YOU could be on the counter and he could be on his knees. stirthepot2

I'd better shut up now. I probably won't though. Never gotten to mess around in the kitchen though...might have to make an attempt. I'll tell her I'm making dessert.

Thankfully AC and I are both short. So that just might work.

And Sadie...I'm pulling for him to replace Regis. He's a natural fit and he and Kelly have too much fun together. I adore AC.

In part, I agree with you - but I will say that it's an easier position to take when you're straight. Taking away all of the really horrible things that have been done as random acts of hate, there are some basic things that you weren't allowed to do not too long ago. Imagine if I told you that you couldn't serve in the military, or bring your spouse to the Christmas party?

Ignorance breeds fear and that fear causes bad choices in behavior.

Now, that said, homosexuality has had a huge paradigm shift and is now quite en vogue. To me, it's become a badge of honor and a bit of a crutch, which does an equal disservice to gay rights. Being gay isn't a handicap, likewise, it isn't an entitlement.

Admittedly, I'm only going by the linked article, but it doesn't sound like me made a big deal out of it. Maybe others did? I do recall some singer coming out a few years ago with "I'm Gay" on the cover of People magazine, but that leads to another question: Is the celebrity making a big deal or is the media making a big deal? Right now, it seems to be big news if a celebrity admits to being homosexual. After the novelty wears off, it won't be.

It does seem to fall on the same lines as the breaking news that Tom Cruise is divorcing Katie Holmes. Why must anyone make a big deal about that? Or any celebrities who are dating? The fact is that there is a market for news about celebrity's personal lives and the media exploit it. It is made a "big deal" because the media make money.

Personally, I do know who Anderson Cooper is, but I've never seen much more than a few clips with him. (Not having TV keeps me out of touch with the celebrity world.) I don't much care. I would care much more if it were someone I knew personally. I think the reason some people care about him is because, as a celebrity, they feel like they know him through his appearances on TV. He talks to them in their living room.

I think we all want to know about the people we care about, and this is something we would want to know. Enough people feel the same kind of closeness to people on TV.

There is also the simple logic from Cooper's point of view. Were he to be photographed kissing a woman, the tabloids would have speculation about "Who is the lovely mystery woman?" or whatever. Were he to be photographed in the same way with a man, the coverage would be sleazy like some dirty secret had been discovered. Now, if such a photograph surfaces, the coverage won't be sleazy. It will be sympathetic, as it is for other celebrities who have come out. This will protect Cooper's public image, something very important for his continued celebrity (and income).
