2021 Allatoona fishing tally

When I was in middle school, we would walk up and down canal banks and shoot Gars with a .22! They would chow down on small game fish if they weren't controlled in some way.

Used to hit them with the bow of the boat in the Coosa River you could hear the thump. I have caught them in the flats and around the St. Marks/Wakulla rivers in Florida. They are useless in my book but some people eat them mixed in with batter and fried like hushpuppies. They are called Gar Balls but I hesitate to mention that with some of the 8th grade humor around here. Come on guys it is low hanging fruit have some restraint. Lord that last sentence didn't help did it? Never mind.

This is more on topic should have mentioned this in the last post sorry. I went by Cherokee Mills park today to check water levels. All three ramps are usable water looks like chocolate milk. I talked to a guy who was loading up to leave and he said the white bass are probably two-three weeks out at Little River and Etowah channels. He seemed to be familiar with the lake. He had 45 crappie in the cooler caught this morning between two of them. I can give details if anyone is interested.

Ain't nothing more fun than when the whites are running.

03/13/21 update: I am happy to report after today's outing the score is now tied 1-1.

We set in late again, this time about 9am. Caught the first fish at about 10:30 and promptly tossed it back, it was a small bass hardly big enough to bite the hook. Soon afterwards we caught a small bream which we also released. Finally I caught what I was after, a slab crappie. We hit them pretty good for an hour or two then it was like their feeding clock was turned off.

Ended up with 16 crappie, one bass, and ine bluegill. It was a beautiful day on the water and it was nice ti finally have a successful day. We docked about 2pm.

You're probably two weeks out from the bass spawn. They will hit the larger coves on the tributaries first because those typically warm faster. Look for sunny banks out of the current, clay banks with gravel near.

Once the water hits the high 60s they will be bedding in shallow water to lay eggs. That's when you can catch some big mamas! Throw slow moving plastics and jogs up to the water's edge and let them settle in the beds, and the sows will attack your bait.

Lemme get my eyes back and we'll run up one day or evening. I'll show you some honey holes.
