While we\'re talking about dogs...

I'm Floored

Lover of BS!
Our sweet little puppy now has demodectic mange! Ugh!

We took her yesterday. She has to take an oral medication daily for a month. From what I've read online, it is going to be a booger to cure.

Does anybody have any experience or advice?

lol I had to reread...I glanced and thought you said demonic rage. I was going to suggest a priest...

I thought it read democratic mange. I was thinking...OMG, that must be a really bad kind.

Haha! When she was really bad about chewing everything in sight, my oldest would have agreed with "demonic rage." Her name is Lucy, and he called her "Lucifer."

:(

It's not as bad as all that. The real pain is having to take her back and forth to the vet for the skin scrapes (about every three weeks, till they are negative.) Are they treating with Ivermectin? If so the good news is you won't have to give heart-worm meds for a while.
There was a time when you had to take her in weekly for baths. Be happy that is not the case. She'll be fine before you know it, then you'll be looking at a dog with a great coat!!

Yes, that's what they've given her. I'm actually a little encouraged, because after reading online some more, this outbreak is probably caused by her first heat coming soon. I'm beginning to think she's a little younger than the vet originally thought.

Hopefully, this will be better soon.

I also read about some treatment with ProMeris. Have you heard about that?

And thanks for your advice! I had forgotten about your expertise!

I'll have to read up on ProMeris. I have heard of it though. Glad I could help. As soon as she is over this you should be able to have her spayed. They most likely will not spay her until she is clear. This type of mange is an immune type thing.

That's exactly what they told me. The lowered immunity that would come with anesthesia and the surgery would make the condition worse. One site I read today actually called it "puberty mange" so I guess it's rather common to present in this way. I just hope she doesn't find herself in a family way before we can have her fixed!

Yep, do you have a place she can hang out in? You'll want to let her out only with supervision, if she goes into heat before she clears up. Otherwise you may end up with pups.

No, we don't. She absolutely can't stay inside because my 11 yo has severe allergies. He hasn't reacted to her at all playing with her (which is in and of itself a miracle) but the doctor says it will be a whole different story if she's inside.

I may have to take her to work with me while the cycle is active. That may be our only option! :) (Pretty please, honey?)
