Marine Cpl. Megan Leavey gave a lot for her country, and so has her favorite comrade — Sgt. Rex.

The dog handler and the bomb-sniffing German shepherd Rex served together for more than three years and through two deployments until a roadside bomb blast in Ramadi, Iraq, in 2006 took them out of commission. Leavey, now recovered and discharged from the Marines, is battling to adopt her old canine-in-arms.

I submitted paperwork last month to adopt a military working dog. I'll be on the list for 12-18 months before a dog is ready.

Awesome, Fox! I hope this girl is allowed to adopt Rex. I read that story earlier. I've read several stories lately about the HUGE value military dogs have been. They say they're still the number one detector of road-side bombs. We love our doggehs!!!

They work very well here for detecting IEDs. Some of the dogs do end up suffering from PTSD.

You can see how...even animals trained in such things would be changed by constant exposure to that much stress and conflict.

There was female black lab working dog here that worked bomb detection that was being retired because she had PTSD. She had an IED explode near her. Since then, she didn't want to work anymore. She was a very friendly and social dog though. She was being given to a family in VA.
