Tough couple of days

More prayers are being lifted for your friend and you. This is tough, and I know how hard it can be. Please know we're thinking about you all!

Praying - how horrible, but you are true blessing in his life! :pray :pray :pray

Just letting you know that there has been no change. He is still sedated and on the vent. They let him awaken slightly for a short while this morning to see if he was responding to commands, and he was. His mother and brother should arrive from NC tonight. We will probably stop by this evening to check on him again.

Quick update. They successfully removed the vent about 7 pm yesterday. They will keep him in ICU for at least 24 hours. It appears that he had aspirational pneumonia, COPD, and neurological problems from his previous accident that have made his diaphragm muscles weak and less responsive. The Doctors have said that if he fails to maintain adequate breathing this time, he may be put on a permanent vent similar to Christopher Reeve. I don't even want to think about that right now.

Prayer will continue!

The good news is that your friend still has options.

Ditto that, HB.

Just got back from a visit. They have moved him to step-down. He was actually able to talk a little. His blood gasses are not great, and he has trouble "remembering" to breathe when he is asleep. The docs say that some of that may be because of the vent and the way the body tells the brain to breathe. If it is he should adjust. If not, he may still need the permanent vent. They are letting him breathe on his own when he is awake, and will probably put him on a Bipap under light sedation tonight.

He is going to have to go to physical rehab and will have to be in a nursing facility for a few months at the very least. But like madea says, he hopefully has options. A serious potential problem is his weakened state due to his injury. He's 6'2" and weighs 115 lbs. Time will tell. He certainly seems better today than yesterday evening, and that's a very good thing.

Forgot to add that he still can't eat, and that may be permanent, or he may at some time be able to eat liquids and blended foods.
