Just a couple of FYI's...

Peanut Colson mentioned an early VCR at the RCA plant his dad worked at. Some of you might recall that the full name of RCA was RCA Victor Company.

The VCR format that won out was the VHS; pretty much obsolete now but sold billions in the day. The VHS format is owned by JVC. JVC stands for Japanese Victor Company. Yes, it was a subsidiary of RCA before being acquired by Panasonic. US fail.

The technology that we now call High Definition TV was originally developed in the late 70's-early 80's by Zenith with a grant from the DOD. Zenith was an American company at the time. Now that High Def TV is big business, how much High Def equipment are we manufacturing in the US? Little, if any. US Fail.

Things like this tick me off! We developed the technology and someone else makes fortunes from it. :rant

Oh and...

The transistor, which was the beginnings of solid state electronics, was invented by Bell Laboratories.

Yes...Bell, as in the phone company.

VHS was junk but because it was cheaper the American public ate it up. BetaMax was the better format.

Beta had superior quality. VHS had a longer playback time.

VHS won the marketing war.

Good grief the trip back through time that you're taking me on ... I remember our first VCR. It was a top load Beta with a wired remote.

Whatever ... remind me who was around to watch man walk on the moon?

Let's see, I'm "29" (cough, cough), Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969, it's 2012...... Y'all do the math! As long as it stil turns out that I'm 29, it's right.

I think I was a teenager, too old to really remember. :D I had much better things to think about in '69, like Woodstock. LOL

I hated it when VHS won the VCR wars. Loved Beta.

I still have 8mm tapes, that I want to put on DVD, which in itself is going obsolete.

I have a mini-DV camcorder, which is also going obsolete.

Bought a nice 35mm camera, which guess what, is old school.

Yep, America has missed out on capitalizing on some of it's discoveries. I think a lot of it has to do with short sightedness, and inflated egos. Still see it happening to a certain extent.
