Russia & Ukraine...the drums of war are getting louder

There is no debating that Russia invaded Ukraine resulting in the deaths of thousands of people. Sure, other factors are at play, but the basics all point to Russia being the aggressor and cause of this stupid war.
I think Putin thought it would go down like conflicts in Georgia, Ukraine, and Chechnya of the past... no other nation would do a thing, especially old doddering fool Biden of the USA. Putin thought he would get to grab back access to the land he had claimed annexed in 2014 in the Crimean peninsula.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, elected in 2019, announced on August 23, 2021 the “countdown” to Russia’s de-occupation of Crimea.

By doing that, Zelensky threatened to cut Russia off from a warm water port and access to European markets... the whole reason Putin wants access to the Crimea Peninsula.

Putin did not count on Ukraine fighting back and having support from other counties. I also think Putin did not know what poor shape his military force had become.

I still don't think we know what is truly going on, our money should not be sent there. We have no oversite as to where the money is going or whose pockets it is going into . This whole thing is going to enrich the Biden Crime Family along with many other swamp creatures of D.C.

I think Putin is in a very bad place now. Reports are that his army is exhausted and in poor morale.

If he doesn't somehow turn this into a stunning victory, he would have shown the world just how weak the Russian military is. This should have been a fairly easy victory for Russia and it hasn't gone that way at all.

If he ends up using nukes, he'll still look weak because the message will be that he couldn't beat Ukraine without them. Then he'll still look weak, and kinda crazy too.

He's still got the options he is using now, the same that many a democratic president has used to look better, sending hardware (missiles) in and blowing crap up.

He can still do a lot of damage without the army.

I do notice that his air force has not been used for a while since they kept losing planes... I wonder if they have been training up?

This isn't over yet since the issue with the pipelines took away his graceful exit.

My point is...he should have been able to easily defeat Ukraine with conventional weapons. His army has performed far worse than anyone expected them to. This has put him in a mess.

I firmly disagree...Ukrainians are fighters and will not easily retreat or give up. They're tough and resourceful (and corrupt and evil but that's for another thread).

No doubt, but they were not well armed and their trained military was small in numbers. This battle is basically between what is supposed to be an elite fighting force against a rag-tag military, but Russia hasn't lived up to it at all.

I will agree with most of that but I seriously believe Putin has not utilized his full force even though much damage and loss of life has occurred. I think he will soon demonstrate that but will stop short of utilizing any form of nuke. I don’t think he’s as dumb or desperate as some think. I don’t have a dog in this race (well, other than tax dollars sent to Z to laundry for Boy Biden) and I actually pray for both sides as well as for resolution and the end of bloodshed.

Also, have you seen the Russian uniforms?

They are soooo pedestrian and bog-standard.

Always remember, if you look good - you play good - and if you play good - you win.

They definitely need a make-over.... until then, they will continue to falter.

I think all the money we have sent has nothing to do with helping the people... it is a big ol' money laundering Ponzi scheme.

JUST IN - Ukraine needs $57 billion to cover the budget deficit next year, and to rebuild critical and power infrastructure. In addition, no less than $5 billion in credit limits to purchase gas and coal, Zelenskyy says at IMF-World Bank.

I'm struggling with this whole matter.

I do think the free world should try and partner together to prevent one country from conquering another free nation without good reason. And I do believe it's in the world's best interest to stand against what Russia is doing here.

BUT...I have serious doubts that the money we're throwing at this is all going where it's supposed to and being used as intended.

It would be better if we had a government we could actually trust.

We can't even trust where our money goes in THIS country, so knowing where it is going in a corrupt country on the other side of the world isn't very likely. While I'd prefer to not keep sending tons of $$ to Ukraine, I also don't want Russia to be able to takeover Ukraine. I'm not sure there is a quicker alternative solution at the moment that doesn't involve direct US military involvement (which would be a bad thing).

Once upon a time, we had a president (Bush 41) who could build coalitions of countries that would stand together against the bad guys.

Now we have a president who craps his pants and makes up fairly tales.

If the 101st is in Europe and we have nuclear subs in the Arabian Sea, don'tcha think things could escalate rather quickly? How much longer til Putin gets whacked or we get into World War 3?

That didn't take long.

30 Houses Progressive Democrats led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, sent a letter sent to the Biden White House urging diplomacy on Ukraine....BUT (and it's a big ole butt, oh yeah, oh yeah)....it has now been officially retracted:
