Got news this morning that the A/C has failed in the telecom room/closet at the building in Maryland where all our department's equipment and servers are installed. They had to shut all the telecom equipment down. No network or telephone access to the building. So I have a light day today. (so far)

Bad news is that the A/C unit is from a manufacturer who is no longer in business and the room was built around the A/C unit so replacement will be a pain. According to my team member up there, blowtorches may be required to get the old one out before they can even think about putting in a new one.

With GD's warning about supply shortages in the A/C industry, I suspect the building may be out of contact for a while....

How big is the room? Couldn't they get some big spot coolers for the time being? I had to do that once when I worked for a large law firm.

As crazy as this sounds, you can rent portable A/C units. We had a hotel that our chiller failed. It took 45 days to receive the new one and get it installed. In the mean time a large semi arrived with a temporary portable until that substituted for the chiller.

Liebert is the big name in dedicated server room A/C. They produce downflow units that use the floor as a plenum, and the racks sit over perforated panels that allows the cold air to blow up into them.

Liebert...that's it. I was trying to remember the system we had at the law firm. That data center had two downflow units as you described.

They may end up doing that if they can. The comms room though is entered from the shipping bay, which is not air conditioned. So they would have to figure out some fancy duct work to keep the door closed.
