Japan\'s reactors

Looking pretty bad right now. Some of the fuel rods are out of the water, and meltdown has begun. If they can't get water over them, they could be looking at a major meltdown and radioactive contamination. Some saying the radiation could even blow over to us.

The whole situation is an unspeakable disaster in so many ways. I've now brought myself to watch some of the amateur footage of the tsunami itself. It looks like something out of a B-grade horror film: very scary but the audience would sit there in the cinema thinking, "Well yes, but that would never happen." Seeing the people huddling in the snow, the children who've lost their parents, the elderly people who've lost their children and grandchildren, is just heart-breaking.

The nuclear dimension must for them be just like poisoned icing on a bad cake. I'm no physicist, but I'd be surprised if sufficient radiation would leak for it to be a hazard in North America. But it could well be a local and semi-local hazard, if it isn't already.

:(

I just posted a headline about the spreading radiation ... it's now in food on surrounding farms.

Can you imagine what some of their elders are going through? They lived through the bombings at the end of WWII and now they are dealing with another radiation nightmare.

It doesn't bear thinking about, what the emotions of the people there must be. I see that some of the food was from farms 100km away, so that's a long distance and a big area that's potentially affected — so far.
