Jack Reacher Book Series

I just finished reading the entire Jack Reacher books in chronological order. Lee Child's has a new one coming out in September.

I like the Jack Reacher character; however, I can't help but think what the guy is going to do when he gets too old to head butt bad guys and kick their butts.

Child's does an a good job making his story lines and characters interesting, but he does get a little too wordy when describing some things. I usually end up scanning over those long descriptions. As a retired member of the US Army and having served 17 of those 25 years in the MP Corps, I wish he would do a little more research on the Army, Military Police, and the Army's Criminal Investigation Division before writing about them. In so many ways he was so far off the mark that I found it annoying.

I read movie rights were purchased on the entire series of books. I like that, but it sucks they have Tom Cruise playing Reacher. Reacher is 6'5" and 250 lbs. His size is a very important part of his character in the books. This leads me to believe the Hollywood script writers will be making some key changes to Reacher's character and I suspect the book fans will blast this movie.

Cruise has not been taking the criticism well and has come out and said he was approved by Child's to play Reacher. If that's true, then many of the books fans will believe Child's sold out and is only thinking of the money. Child's can do whatever he wants, it's his creation; but I think if box office sales for this movie aren't good, there most likely wouldn't be a second movie, especially with Cruise as Reacher.

A couple of guys I know here in Afghanistan have read some of the books. One suggested the Roc or Stone Cold Austin should have been picked for the Reacher role. I disagree with those choice as well. It should not only be someone who looks like the character, but can act as well.

I did like the book series and when the movie comes out, I'll see what the reviews are like before I decide to see it at the theater or wait until it comes out on DVD.

I have read every Child book since he started writing. I love the books. Unless you are in the military or associated with it closely I can't imagine that it would bother you (not you specifically, you posted it, so it does. :)) ) to have things not be exactly as they are in real life. If I was reading non fiction, but a fiction series, no. He does get very lengthy in descriptions and that is one complaint some in my book club have, unfortunately he sometimes throws important things into those 2 page descriptions and people do miss them because they skim those parts.
He is very popular both here and the UK. He wanted a global actor and while Cruise would not be my first choice because of size, he can pull off the part. He has had some duds, but overall a fantastic actor. Since Child has supported that choice in so many interviews I am thinking the fans will be okay with Cruise. The movie comes out in December. Child was also a director prior to being a writer so he is already okay with any changes that need to be made to the character to have a world known actor play him.
I have a couple Lee Child/ Jack Reacher threads in the Book Review section and I believe one where the movie and Cruise were discussed.

I believe an author writing fiction should be a lot more accurate when using real things. I read his Reacher short story, "Second Son" about when Jack was 13 yrs old and they were living on Okinawa. Childs wrote Reacher's father was wearing BDUs (Battle Dress Uniform), which would have been impossible as the Marine Corps didn't start issuing them until 1982. In another book he referred to starting a Humvee by pushing a red button. That's now how they start. There were just too many military technical things that were wrong, but not hard at all to research so he would have been correct.

Don't get me wrong, the stories were great; but I just wish he had been more accurate.

And yes, there are far better actors than he to play that role.

I have to disagree with SD on the choice of Cruise playing Reacher. Sorry, but Cruise was a very poor choice to play Reacher.

I said he was not my first choice, but can pull it off. He is talented, whether a jerk in real life or not. Luckily Hollywood and Child agrees. :))

Eh, the whole accuracy for the starting a humvee or wearing an outfit, doesn't seem to bother his sales. I guess if you are very familiar with those things it would bother you, but I suppose most of his fans are like me and do not care. It is a fictional story and since I am not familiar with years that dress blues or a push button starts a vehicle it just does not matter. (I am pretty sure most fictional authors take liberty with actual facts. For instance I was reading a book that the story line happened to be located where I grew up. Many things about the area were in fact inaccurate, but made a better story. I am reading fiction for pleasure and not for facts and figure most would not know that anyway. :dunno )

Kilmer is a washed up actor. He needs a good role to get back into the game.
