Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-N.J., defended the presence of both legal and illegal immigrants on Tuesday, asking his constituents: "Who do you think is mowing our beautiful lawns?"
"There are a lot of jobs in our community, that like it or not, for better or for worse, Americans are not willing to take,” Malinowski said in a video obtained by the Washington Examiner.

I'm really tired of hearing liberals say Americans are not willing to take certain jobs in order to justify illegals being here. The truth of the matter is Americans were doing these jobs until more illegals showed up in our country taking the jobs away from them for less pay. I know several Americans who started lawn care and landscaping businesses who found it difficult to compete with Hispanic owned companies because they worked so cheap. The same thing for house painters, building trades jobs, manufacturing jobs, etc.
I know a few guys up here who used to work for some of the chicken processing plants in Gainesville. They earned a living wage and were laid off and replaced by Hispanic workers who were paid less. We recently saw in the news how ICE arrested 680 illegals working in 7 chicken processing plants in Mississippi a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure they would have similar results if they went into the same type of plants here in our state.
While in graduate school, I did a paper on how immigration is taking away STEM jobs from Americans. Many high tech companies are bringing in immigrants on H1B visas, claiming there is a shortage of STEM qualified Americans. My research showed that many of the American employees at these companies were laid off after they trained their replacement. The H1B immigrants were being paid less than the American they replaced - a lot less. These companies continue to lobby Congress to increase the number of H1B visas claiming there is a shortage in the US, but graduation rates at our universities and colleges show that is not true. Another very interesting thing is how these same companies seek work visas for the spouses of H1B immigrants stating it's necessary for them to provide more income to pay their family bills. Sounds to me as if those companies are admitting they are not paying these immigrants very much. The sad thing is, Congress goes along with it and more Americans lose their jobs.
Our unemployment rates are low, but look at how much more median income would increase if immigration numbers were decreased to numbers of actual need rather than to replace Americans with imported income earners. The U3 unemployment rate (those currently receiving unemployment benefits) is 3.7% for the nation. The real tale of unemployment used should be the U6 rate. The U6 unemployment rate counts not only people without work seeking full-time employment (the more familiar U-3 rate), but also counts "marginally attached workers and those working part-time for economic reasons." Note that some of these part-time workers counted as employed by U-3 could be working as little as an hour a week, but they prefer full-time employment but haven't landed it yet. And the "marginally attached workers" include those who have gotten discouraged and stopped looking, but still want to work. The current U6 unemployment rate is 7.9%.
If you recall, far more part-time jobs than full-time jobs were created during the Obama administration thanks largely to Obamacare, as Obamacare put 90% of the cost of healthcare premiums on the burden of employers, limiting employees to pay no more than 10% of the premium for employer provided health insurance. The U3 unemployment rate for December 2016 was 4.7% while the U6 was 9.2%. There are a lot of Americans working part-time who are still seeking full-time employment. It's also important to note the U6 rate also includes those working full-time for less pay than they received from the previous job they lost.
Immigration whether legal or illegal can and does have adverse conditions on employment and earnings for Americans. There has to be a balance and that balance has been tipped in the favor of legal and illegal immigrants in too many cases and conditions all because of greed and politics. Our immigration laws were written to balance this all out in favor of American workers. Immigration numbers were increased only when there was truly a shortage of available Americans to meet job growth.
I am sick and tired of immigration being politicized by politicians on both sides of the aisle. Republicans talk tough about illegal immigration, but they did little about it when they were the majority in both houses and had the WH. Both parties favor increasing H1B visa numbers in return for campaign contributions from major corporations. Dems favor open borders for votes to gain more political power. Americans should come first and it's disgusting how we often are put in the back seat by our elected officials.
