I Lost a Very Dear Friend This Week......

Rest in Peace my dear friend Don Jennings (May 2, 1960 – March 8, 2012).

I don’t yet know all the details but I do know they found him in his current home in a very remote area of Kentucky and that his home had been destroyed by the recent tornadoes that came through last weekend.

Don and I graduated from high school together wayyyyyyyy back in 1978 and have remained friends since then. We graduated from a very “prim and proper” (sort of private) high school in North Georgia but went to different colleges. I always admired his free spirit, creativity, compassion, intelligence and yes, sometimes his rebellious spirit. :) I always wanted to have his courage! :)

Don was a very accomplished artist and short story writer having received the Tacenda Literary Award for the Best Short Story of 2007 that illuminated social injustice. His work (under his writing name of Randy Lowens) has appeared in Thieves Jargon, JMWW, Dogmatica, and elsewhere.

Don and I were polar opposites when it came to our political views but we didn’t let that keep us from being good friends. He respected my opinions as well as his other conservative friends and I respected his. He had so much to offer this world and I am so sad that we have lost him.

I always think of John Lennon’s song “Imagine” when I think of Don – fits him perfectly!

Don’t miss an opportunity to tell not only your family members you love them but also your friends. Friends are a very vital, precious part of our lives. I, along with many, many other people, will miss this man terribly.

That's why the present day is called the present, because it is. None of us is guaranteed the next five minutes. May God bless you and your friends family.
