Nathan Deal has hinted that more cuts could come. Education funds have been slashed to the bone already so I was encouraged to read this AJC article. It is possible, according to insiders, that the spending plan may cut costs by consolidating government agencies, including the one that oversees the state’s pre-K programs.

I remember when Carter was governor of this state. He consolidated government agencies and it made a mess of things. There ended up being more work than what could be handled by those doing it.

The school districts need to also take a long hard look at their budgets to look at where they can cut some of their budgets. I have said this at another site and I'll bring it up here, but one of the things our schools might have to look hard at is the sports programs. If they want to keep them, they should consider a pay to play system to pay for sports until the economy starts to improve.

Another thing they seriously need to consider is changing the start date for school. Starting school the first Tuesday following Labor Day could save lots of money in the costs of air conditioning. Do we need a full week off for Thanksgiving? I know lots of school districts in other states where they only get Thanksgiving Day and that Friday off for Thanksgiving. That's all we got off for that holiday when I was a kid in Augusta.

This year, our schools in Paulding get a week off for Easter and then another week off in April for Spring Break. Is it really necessary to have that week off in April. The schools would save money eliminating this week off and shortening Thanksgiving.

I'm sure there are other things that can be done to reduce expenditures during the school year.

The school system in Paulding has really cut to the bone. They don't have middle school sports any more. At least that is my understanding. I agree about starting school later. I don't have a problem with a 4 day week either. I have my own thoughts about the pre-K program and don't have a problem consolidating that program with another.

They can still go pay to play for sports as the fees would cover the costs. The school district wouldn't be shelling the money out.

You know, we pay now. We pay about $500 for our kid on the high school team each baseball season. They can't "make" anyone pay it, because we're in the public school system. But most DO pay it. And there's still not enough money!

They aren't paying to play football.

I wondered about that, because I had heard that, too. Why would they ask for participation fees for some sports and not for others?

A lot of school districts look at the costs vs participation and ticket sales. Face it, football and basketball sell a lot of tickets at high schools compared to baseball, soccer, softball and track. If it doesn't pay for itself, they want participation fees. The football sportsboosters want the money generated from football to pay for just football and the football needs.

You do know that it would involve an amendment to the state constitution to do anything to the pre-k program, right? That money is protected.

Not exactly right. We don't have a week for Easter and a week in April. We had the February Winter break and then the Spring break in April. The week in March is 1 hour early release days for conferences.

We paid $300 for our son to play football this year in high school. They could sell the discount cards and cokes to help raise the money but there was a fee to play.

Actually I think if the funds are not there they are allowed to make some changes. Hey, I am just commenting on the statements I read in the report. They can make changes to it just as they can cut remedial classes for Hope and they will do that I believe.

I would revamp the Hope Scholarship by using SAT scores rather than maintaing a "B" average. I suspect because of the large amounts of students having to take remedial classes, teachers are padding grades. It's impossible to pad an SAT score.

The funds come from the lottery though so the State budget issues have nothing to do with it and the lottery is bringing in tons of money.

No, it is in shortfall. It will not cover all who have applied. Part of the Governor's address speaks about trying to save it.

Sorry, I think we're talking about different things. Which one is in trouble, Hope or pre-k?
They are both funded by the lottery. When the lottery can't cover them they are both short.

Are they both funded the exact same percentages? Do they both have the same shortages and or growth?
