Grim orders in New York

NYFD ordered to not transport patients in cardiac arrest. If paramedics cannot get an immediate pulse on site they are to pronounce. It is unclear if the paramedics are allowed to perform an physical CPR or if they may only attach an AED.

It has also been reported that in some hospitals cancer patients are being pressured to sign a DNR, and in other cases families of critically ill patients taking up ICU beds are being pressured to transfer their loved ones to hospice.

I thought that was what the Navy ship Comfort was for?
The 1,000-Bed Comfort Was Supposed to Aid New York. It Has 20 Patients.
“It’s a joke,” said a top hospital executive, whose facilities are packed with coronavirus patients.

The ship’s 1,000 beds are largely unused, its 1,200-member crew mostly idle.

Only 20 patients had been transferred to the ship, officials said, even as New York hospitals struggled to find space for the thousands infected with the coronavirus. Another Navy hospital ship, the U.S.N.S. Mercy, docked in Los Angeles, has had a total of 15 patients, officials said.

I saw this a bit ago. Something smells about this who story; don't know if it's untrue or if the system is just so screwed up that they are not sending patients over. My understanding was that the ships were sent to handle non-COVID patients, freeing up space in the hospitals.

Regardless...remember that the NY Times has become little more than an anti-Trump rag.

Apparently they were supposed to take only injury patients, not medical patients. The hospitals have already dumped most of those patients on rehab facilities. They may start taking post surgery patients now. I think the biggest problem is the hoops that a patient has to jump through to get on board. I do understand what a complete catastrophy it would be if a Covad-19 infected patient made it on, but still, there has to be something better they can do than 10 patients a day.

From the article:

...there is not a high volume of non coronavirus patients. Because most New Yorkers have isolated themselves in their homes, there are fewer injuries from car accidents, gunshots and construction accidents that would require an emergency room visit.

Ultimately, Mr. Dowling and others said, if the Comfort refuses to take Covid patients, there are few patients to send. And given the pernicious spread of the disease in New York City, where nearly 50,000 were infected as of Thursday, dividing patients into those who have it and those who do not is pointless, he said.

The solution, he and others said, was to open the Comfort to patients with Covid-19.

There is no scenario in which the ship can take Covid patients. It has no provision for isolation, and in the close quarters it would be easily spread. It would be a guarantee of infection to nearly all, and a virtual death sentence to many patients and staff on board.

This was no secret when the ship was deployed to New York. If they couldn't use it, they shouldn't have requested it.

I would think that trauma patients would not be suitable as it's a crap shoot as to whether the patient has been exposed to the virus. The ship should be taking all of the virus free post op patients, and there should be more than 20,,, unless they have managed to expose everyone at the hospitals. What a freakin' mess New York makes of everything!

You know... the buzz is that Cuomo will be a replacement for Slow Joe... I just don't see this a success story for him? Cuomo is not who I want as president.

I have not been

It was more about finding stuff to bash Trump over than needing help.

ooops.

A crew member aboard the USNS Comfort, the Navy hospital ship docked in New York City, has tested positive for coronavirus, according to a report.

The news came after President Trump confirmed the 1,000-bed ship will start treating coronavirus cases after originally being sent to Manhattan to take on cases unrelated to the pathogen.

In a statement originally obtained by ABC News, the Navy said the diagnosis of the crew member would have “no impact” on the Comfort’s mission and it “will not affect the ability for Comfort to receive patients.”
