The Democrats are being hypocritical in their filibuster or Gorsuch; many of the ones who oppose him now voted to confirm him to the circuit court in 2006. List below

Former President Barack Obama

Former Vice President Joe Biden

Former Sen. Harry Reid

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, ranking member of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary

Sen. Maria Cantwell

Sen. Tom Carper

Sen. Patrick Leahy

Sen. Robert Menendez

Sen. Patty Murray

Sen. Bill Nelson

Sen. Jack Reed

Sen. Debbie Stabenow

Sen. Ron Wyden
The filibuster was not a part of the original senate rules. Even after the concept was proposed, it was hardly used until about 100 years later. Both parties have used the filibuster, and many argue for it's merit. IMO, I think it tends to be used more for obstruction than our protection. Of course, each "side" likes it when our people are in power, and hates it when the other guys are in power. And unfortunately, only a simple majority is required to change the rules on it, so it can be brought back at any time by whichever party has a slim majority.

Regardless, Gorsuch is eminently qualified and deserves to be confirmed, so perhaps the right thing is (presumably) happening, whether by using the right methods or not.

Thoughts on this?

The "previous question motion" which allowed any Senator to move for Cloture by a simple majority vote was done away with in 1806 largely by mistake in a general purge of rules that Burr found to be duplicative or unnecessary. Even though it opened the door for a filibuster, because there was now no rule for cutting off debate, the lack of a cloture rule was first used to obstruct in 1837 by holding the floor. Many attempts were made to reinstate the previous question motion, but with a Senate not nearly as polarized as it is today, nothing ever came of it. it wasn't until the Republicans successfully stopped Wilson from arming merchant ships in 1917 that there was a real call for a cloture rule.

So there is no Constitutional question involved at all. There isn't even really a long and storied history of cooperation to consider. Indeed the original rule that was mistakenly done away with was a rule of simple majority, not supermajority.

The real shame here is that the Senate was able to go for so long and really never use the lack of a cloture rule for partisan purposes. Even after 19 17 it was rarely used. Now it seems that it was weaponized like every other aspect of the political landscape. That is the shame of our current two party political system, a system that was derided by every founding father.

You guys should really go over to the commie forum and read the blubby's post about this. I just popped in for a moment and saw it. Once I got through laughing, I almost puked!

Whatever it takes for confirmation to happen is fine with me. Worry about any political backwash later.

No matter what else happens in the next 3 plus years today will be the one to remember. No matter your personal take on Trump he followed through on at least one of his campaign promises. All is good, now let's pray we don't spend ourselves into eternity or worse yet, start WWIII. Aside from those we'll be just fine...continue on.

The Democrats are screaming, "FOUL" that the GOP used the nuclear option. What freakin' hypocrites they are as they used the same option themselves when they last held the majority.

I hope the chinless wonder McConnell saw how easy that was, and will actually DO things to shut Schumer and the rest of the crybaby Dems up for the next 4 years. What part of WE WON doesn't he understand? Crush them. They are irrelevant.

“I really do believe that I have set the Senate so when I leave, we’re going to be able to get judges done with a majority. It takes only a simple majority anymore. And, it’s clear to me that if the Republicans try to filibuster another circuit court judge, but especially a Supreme Court justice, I’ve told 'em how and I’ve done it, not just talking about it. I did it in changing the rules of the Senate. It’ll have to be done again." - Harry Reid in interview with Talking Points Memo, October 2016 prior to the election

“Unless after this election there is a dramatic change to go back to the way it used to be, the Senate will have to evolve as it has in the past,” Reid said. “But it will evolve with a majority vote determining stuff. It is going to happen.” - Harry Reid in an interview with the new York Times in August 2016, prior to the election.

It seems that when Reid and the Democrats knew that they would win the Presidency, and strongly suspected that they would pick up the Senate, they were quite ready and willing to "go nuclear" themselves. So when a Democrat tells you that the Republicans have ruined the Senate, throw these quotes in their face, and be sure to cite your sources.

Flog the Dems and feed 'em butter beans. It would only be a matter of time until they took the option themselves at some future point. Their previous actions were only a picture of things to come. Might as well beat them to it and beat their a$$ in the process.

The Dems used the nuclear option in 2013.
