Everyone has heard of the “Generation Gap” and it’s nothing new, I found out tonight it’s true. I’ve posted before that I’m one of the oldest students at the martial arts dojo which I attend. The owner is about 7 years younger than me and since the shutdown the only person older than me has not returned. There are 3 or 4 others within a few years of me but by far most are less than half my age and many are only a third. Tonight while waiting for class to begin I asked two young adults their opinion of the Portland issue and said I wanted to hear how younger generations view it. One was familiar and said he didn’t care as long as it doesn’t come to his doorstep and if it did then someone would get hurt. Believe me when I say he could hurt someone quickly, he’s quite the specimen and does things humans aren’t meant to do. Anyway, that’s another story. The other person wasn’t aware of it but once we specified she quickly said she thought it was great. Then she asked if I was aware that unmarked people were kidnapping protesters and nobody knows who they are or where they’re taking them. When I asked if it mattered that property was being destroyed and crimes were being committed she responded that it’s the only way to make change happen. Then she went into a rant about the system being broken, people being forced to risk their lives going back to work and for very little money, that her generation feels they can build something better. When I asked what that would be she had no answer, just said anything would be better. She claims to gather her news from multiple sources so not to form a one sided opinion but it sure was funny she had only negative things to say about our system. She also ranted about LE shouldn’t be allowed to police the streets with only 6 months experience, that they’re not qualified to handle the different situations. She said hair dressers have more training than police. She felt a minimum of 4 years schooling should be required, like a college degree.
I honestly didn’t want to get into a political debate over it, especially since I was the one asking for their opinion. I had to bite my tongue and refrain from saying what I wanted to say. It just wasn’t the place or time so I digressed, but now I’m not sure I can view her the same way. That in itself also proves the generation gap exists, I’m just too old to tolerate nonsense.
