Gabriel Gomez for Mass. Senate Seat

LisaC

I'm here to spin the moral compass.
What are your thoughts on this guy? He is running for John Kerry's seat in Massachusetts and seems to be a pretty liberal Republican. He's pro life, but recognizes the limits set by Roe v. Wade, is okay with same sex marriage, but he is a Catholic. For Navy SEAL with a degree from Harvard. He said that he supported Obama in 2008 and wants to make the "gang of eight" a "gang of nine." He is a clear underdog in this race with his opponent bringing in Clinton, Obama, etc., but his support numbers actually look like he might have a chance.

Thoughts?

My thought is I'm glad I don't live in MA. Scott Brown is pretty liberal, and both the Maine chicks are as well.

MA is one of the most schizophrenic states we have.
It's all those years of Catholic repression.
:)

Massachusetts is definitely a crazy state. It's one of the ones that I would love to see it switch from democrat-control, but I'm not sure that I'm buying that this guy is a republican - I think he is more of an Independent.

Actually, read about him and give me your thoughts - it looks like conservatives aren't shying away from him - McCain has been campaigning for him too. Maybe I just consider him more liberal compared to some of the old guard.

John McCain is no conservative. And Gomez is WAY more liberal than most anyone else. A conservative probably couldn't get elected up there.

Gomez could end up as one of the faces of the "new" republican party... :dunno

Yes, if by "new", you mean dead. The party is headed for doom via a MAJOR fracture (i.e., conservative elements breaking away) if they don't shape up. And for those who say oh, if people desert the GOP, it'll mean disaster at the ballot box, I say - How much worse could it be? We already have a Dem Senate, a Dem President, and spineless wimp Representatives. :sigh:

True dat... We have a sad situation on our hands and we need to figure out a way to turn it around. The old guard isn't working anymore.

Someone with truly conservative or Libertarian views is unlikely to win any election in that state.
That is the state that social welfare built.

Unlikely things can happen - Romney was governor of Massachusetts. Granted, he only served one term, but he was still elected.

BTW, I would like to state for the record that I was not talking about social conservatism in my post above (when I said conservatives will abandon the GOP). I am a socon, but I do not believe the government should have any role in that arena. I was referring to fiscal and national security conservatism and libertarianism (little "l").

He does have some conservative values and he is still a republican that was voted into office in a democrat-controlled state. Getting anyone with a "R" next to their name voted into office there is a pretty good feat.

Yes, Romney at the Federal level had some conservative values but we weren't talking about that. Our little tangent concerned a candidate that is a conservative republican and liberal republican. You won't see a conservative win an election in Massachusetts. Romney was no conservative hence my comment "a conservative he was not".
